Well, I'm pretty sure this question has been asked many times before, but I'm a newbie to the forum, and would appreciate it if some of you veterans would share your opinions and preferences on the value of and the best choices for scenting jigs. To scent or not to scent... that is the question... with what? Thanks in advance for sharing!

Crappie nibbles... don't be ashamed. We all use them!

Are you talking about those little pill looking things in different colors? Where do you put them? Do they come in different flavors? What is your preference?

I usually stick two into the tip of my hook. I use the chartreuse ones. Think they're all the same scent. Good way to mix up colors I guess if you need to, but I think chartreuse always helps!

I'm no veteran, nor guru, but one thing I do when crappie fishing and using jigs. I crush up a few crappie nibbles between my fingers so that when I handle the jig, the nibble scent gets on the jig rather then anything else. Only drawback is, sometimes I forget to wash them before putting a dip in. Man that stuff is nasty!

You wanna keep those crappie nibbles relatively cool. They'll melt together if you leave them out in the summer.

IMHO, you don't need scents at all. I personally have used 3 Crappie Nibbles in the past three years and that's it!! And, I have had no problems catching plenty of crappie. I think (with a few exceptions) applying scents takes time away from my fishing (every second counts), they can be messy, and they cost money that would be better spent buying other, more useful supplies.

Now, I know some people who swear by some type of scent and I am by no means knocking them at all. It really boils down to confidence. If you think adding scents to your bait helps you catch more fish, then it probably helps you catch more fish.

Now, back to the one exception I have. Obviously if I have used three Crappie Nibbles then I have bought some. I found one instance after a major front blew through when I absolutely could not get a bump...not a bump!! I refuse to be skunked, so I dug deep in my bag and found a two year old bottle of Crappie Nibbles. I put one on my jig and BAM...crappie. I caught two more within a few minutes and then nothing for the next hour.
You can either chalk that up to the Nibble, or you can say that a few active fish just happened to swim through and would have bitten regardless. I have been fortunate enough to not have been skunked in many years, so I haven't tested this theory again.

I will say, that some of the baits that I buy come scented (or salted) by the manufacturer...I just don't add my own. The only way that you will truly answer this question is through trial and error. Try one or two and see if you like them or not...and if in the end you think it helps you catch more fish, then your confidence in them is actually what helps you the most.

Good fishin' and I'm sure you will get a few more responses...I am by no means a crappie pro, but that is just my two cents.

I actually bought a bottle of Kick N' Crappie fish attractant, and all the difference that I've noticed so far is that the keys on my laptop are shine-yer! Haven't tasted it so far but smells real garlicky...

The nibbles smell like aquarium fish food.

I use Megastrike on all soft plastics. Used it for years on worms and eventually figured out crappie like it too.

One tube will last for a year, so it's not too expensive.

I only fish with 2" tubes, some hollow, some solid, the scent will last as long as a tube does.

Tackle Warehouse sells it. Hard to find locally.

I occasionally use crappie nibbles, if i can't otherwise buy a bite...I am not sold on them...personally, before i will pull out the nibbles jar...i will lip hook (or eye hook) a small minnow on my jig...cause if they won't bite that combo, they won't bite anything. Once the crappie get hammered and quit biting most everything, I will use a small jig head and hook up a headless minnow, to try to get bites....I prefer to jig fish one pole (if I am in a boat and the bite is slow, I will rig a minnow on another pole and tight line it while i am jigging...If my jigs aren't working and the minnow is, then I will switch to minnows...In short, i give them what they show me they want, I don't try to feed them something they don't want. The key, which was stated above, is do what you have confidence in...crappie fishing is all about detail and maybe superstition, to an extent...And yes, I have had times when, if there wasn't a nibble on the hook, you didn't have a prayer...BUT I exhausted all my other confidence options first...but that is just me... Hope this info helps.

I've tried them before but have never had success with them.

When I'm fishing with jigs I'll take that jig and rub it on the side of a crappie to get some scent on it. It works! You can even rub it on the side of a minnow also. Try it.
