Let me know what you all think.
I currently have the Humminbird 598 at the console and a cheaper lowrance up front. I want to get larger units at both locations. My issue is I don't feel GPS is needed up front but only at the console and buying a unit without gps would save money. right? I was thinking of getting a larger screen SI unit with GPS at the console and the same up front but without GPS. Agree or disagree?
What units would you recommend? I would probably prefer to stay with Humminbird at the console since I already have that wired up and would be ok with either brand up front.
I'm ok with buying used so I would think I could make this happen for around 1600 bucks, right?
Suggestions on units please..
Thanks in advance

Electronics are good when they work. Else then are more trouble then they are worth.

I run a 1198 interlinked with a 997. I run2 seperate gps pucks. makes marking waypoints right on the money when your marking with the back graph you know its right off the back and when you mark it with the trolling motor its right off the bow with the pucks being placed on the back right corner and beside my trolling motor tray. sure is handy to have gps on both front and back if you do any kind of deep fishing and your trying to stay on a certain location or waypoint. Just my 2 cents. Works really well for me.

I have GPS both at the console and up front on my boat. I use the GPS up front a lot especially when locating a waypoint, or following a creek channel. I have Lowrance at both the console and up front. I would stick with one or the other and not mix brands.
So many fish, so little time.

what you should really do is move the 598 to trolling motor and purchace the most graph you can afford for your console cause most time you will be looking from the console for structure toss a bouy make cast fish on!!

if you are fishing open deep water then a gps up front is awesome to keep you on the spot. following creeks also becomes much easier with it.

The Humminbird 1198 and 997 are both great graphs. The side imaging is better on a Humminbird, the structure scan is better on Lowrance. I personally find side imaging much more valuable then structure scan. Lowrance has a very clear and detailed screen while the Humminbird seems much easier to use. You cant go wrong with the 997. Most of the time I use my gps on my console rather than up front. I hope this helps!

GPS at console and "buoy tossing" combine for an easy solution. I use it a lot for open water spots. Like everything new, I did not want to go with GPS anything. However, now that I have survived the GPS learning curve with some degree of sanity, it has made my fishing life much easier with its ability to recall spots, tracking, etc. I hate to give up all my "old school" and there is just something good about marking a spot with a buoy.
