im going to do some experimenting and look at my downscan image while adjusting my side imaging beams close and far, and see if there is an effect on downscan quality.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Haven't considered all of that.

I do know that the Side Imaging units do not have a DI crystal in the transducer and the DI image is a computer generated image using the SI pulses.

I don't use DI regularly, just occasionally for a different perspective of a subject and to take screen shots for teaching purposes. Its value is very low when compared to SI, IMHO

I agree, but if we can achieve better down images by making a few adjustments, it would be cool. I normally run my SI beams around 48 feet, but will try to match them to the depth below the boat tommorow. If my theory is right, it should sharpen the Di image considerably because the shorter pulse width beams, should give greater target seperation, and hopefully generate greater detail in the image.
I wish I knew exactly how Humminbirds program executes, but its proprietery information. (as it should be).
I will find out thru cause and effect though.

Some pics from my 360 Imaging taken yesterday at Lewisville lake. Settings were: Sensitivity 12, Contrast Low, Standard sweep speed.

Wayne, what about the 788 HDDI unit? It only has DI and no SI. Are you saying this unit would have a DI crystal?
For my type fishing DI is perfect. IF you are telling me what I see is computer generated, it does one fine job. I only fish brushpiles/condos for crappie and that means I find it very effective to be able to see what is directly below the bow of my boat. We did ok without it but, it is just a big plus. I run my 788 in a split screen mode with 2D on top and DI on bottom. The images align perfectly and I can easily see if there are crappie on the brush or not.
I don't care how they do it, I'm just glad they do!
And the resolution is excellent.

Diel, in picture three at 270 degrees it shows a brushpile perfectly!! You can be sure it is a brushpile as you can see the shadow out past it! Very impressive.

Down Imaging units use a dual crystal transducer. One does 2D and the other does DI.

Wayne, I know the beam is very narrow and seem to recall you can select narrow, medium and wide. Do you happen to know the beam width for each?

DI models do not have the selectable width like the SI models have. The only way to select coverage width is by changing frequency on a DI Model. 455kHz is 86 and 800kHz is 55

Basically Wide is like 455 in DI Model and Medium is like the 800kHz.

Doug, I have both an 1198 and a 788 and assume from above that the cone angle is the same for all?
So, on the 1198 and in DI mode and 800khz operation the cone angle is 86 degrees? Seems awfully wide to me considering how small an area it shows at say 20' of water. I understand that the 2D cone angle is only 7 degrees. Is that correct?

I am planning on installing a 858c on the bow of my boat. I currently have a 997 at the console. I know I will need the interlink to connect these two units.
My questions are:
Is the Interlink system just plug and play ?
Will all of my way points be automatically transferred to the 858?

Question 1, not quite
Question 2. yes, if you set it up correctly

Read the INTERLINK manual:

Why would you use Interlink in stead of ethernet? Is it because one or the other of these units don't have ethernet?
If not, what advantage does Interlink have over ethernet?

The 997 is not Ethernet capable, INTERLINK is his only choice to share GPS data.

INTERLINK has only one "advantage" if you consider that an advantage. It writes GPS data to the other unit's memory. Ethernet displays its data on the other unit in a different color if both are Ethernet capable.
