I have heard burping mentioned a few times and would like to get some information.
1. Why should a fish be burped? 2. How do you know if a fish needs to be burped? 3. How do you go about burping a fish?

Hold it firmly but with a gentle grip. Place the catfish on your shoulder above a burping rag. Gently pat the catfish on the back until it releases the gas.

I usually burp a fish if it has come out of water deeper than 45 feet to be on the safe side.

if you get a fish out of deep water and the belly looks all bloated up you need to burp it. get a 1/2 inch pvc pipe around 18 inches long. sand the edges smooth.lay the fish on its stomach. insert into the gullet but not much past the opening. may have to press on the stomach and work the pipe gently back and forth to release the air.
