Hey guys...I am new to fly fishing and am already pondering getting a second rod/reel combo. I currently have a 9'6" 6wt Loop and it works fine (I rigged it with a 7wt line). I've only been fly fishing for about a month now so I'm not even really sure if I would need a 2nd setup.

I mainly target largemouth bass.

Do any of you have any thought/advice on what size rod I should get? I'm thinking of getting something smaller/lighter. Perhaps a 2-3wt rod. I hear it's pretty fun catching a nice sized LMB on a super light fly rod.

Or should I just continue using my 6wt and invest in a fly tying kit?

Thanks guys!

I fish for bass all the time on my 4wt and love it. I have a 3wt and feel it is a little light for the job when you do hook into something bigger than 3-4lbs. I use a Orvis T3 8'-6" 4wt from my canoe and have a great time, more so than when using my 6wt.

Of course there is nothing wrong with having more than 2 rods ;-)

Good luck,
Brent

I think I met you and another friend with Evan down on LELA?

To be honest, although I am an ultralight fly fishing guy, but I wouldnt recommend a light rod just yet. Sounds like your targeting LMB, and they really like beefy hairy big flies which are best thrown using larger tackle say an true 8WT or at least and 8 up-lined with WF9. If you go this route, you can better feel the rod load with these heavier flies and catch more LMB or stripers.

Once you get a better feel with your casts (a few lessons courtesy of a CCI wouldnt hurt), then go lighter- a 4wt will be good. Ive seen guys go too light too early, and the results are poor timing and bad habits. Just my opinion, but its better to learn to cast well before buying more gear.

Les

Yep, met you at LLELA with Evan and Chris. Thanks for the advice. You've convinced me to sit tight and work on mechanics first before buying new gear. Thanks again Les.

Hey Les! I'm glad you talked him into holding a bit. He gets a loop 6wt and immediately wants another rod! Hehe most of us would pray for any Loop rod wink

I told him to buy a fly tie kit for now. Then cast my 2wt reddington and see if he wants to join us in the nutty UL crowd.

James gets better mechanics everyday and I've seen him have early success everywhere we go. Not worried about him being able to cast any wt he wants soon.

Something about bringing in a 4 plus lber on a UL gear gets me up super early. To each his own I guess.

See you guys on the water,
Evan
