Is it the bearings? I have an old 5500c that I used for years on my carolina rig but now it makes so much noise that I do not use it. If I put some boca bearings in it will that solve the problem.

Could be a dry idler gear, brake weights/brake case, or bearing. To be honest, a cleaning and service would probably take care of it.

Matt's probably right. As many Abu Garcia reels as I use, I've never had to replace a bearing. Seems like a little oil on the idler gear spindle solves the problem. Don't ask me how long it took to figure that one out on my own.
