Planning a trip there Feb 11-16 and have heard smallmouth fishing was good then. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Fishing at Canyon is never "good". You will be lucky if its even close to decent.

Not my favorite place and I haven't fished there in years. But the few times I hit some smallies was down around the dam. There's some humps out there that use to hold some fish.

Last October I went three weekends in a row and caught several smallies over 2lbs every trip on verticle bluffs in really deep water letting a heavy jig fall from shelf to shelf. Not sure about February though. Usually got small largemouths on points.

P.b. smallmouth out of canyon is four pounds there are plenty around the dam steep ledges and the marinas in the two, three pound range. Use finesse jigs small rattletraps and tubes in a smoke color with a rattle. On a separate note fishing has been outstanding at canyon went there last Friday and really whacked em . Largemouth up river the bite is good on a tx rig probably had about 16# on five biggest which is good for that lake. But other than size we caught numbers around 30 in a five hour trip. Go to canyon no one is fishing it no pressure the bite is on.

We mostly fish T-Rigs for LMB. The times we have fished the steeper drop offs and bluffs we have always caught some SMBs. They fight about twice as hard as a LMB so you think you really have something big. They jump a lot more too. One day I will target just SMBs and see what we get.

Drop shotting the bluff walls has always worked well for me.

fished it for two days last summer. It was freaking tuff... Went there to find a smally. didn't happen. I would fish the marinas if I went back but don't get your hopes up.. Cool lake though. TPWD needs to do some stocking there.
Take Dead Aim I'd rather be lost on the water than found at work! SkeeterEater

Last winter I fished along the dam with suspending jerkbaits....caught a few smallies and a striper. Good trip.
