I have a hard time casting using jigs from the bank. I am new to jig fishing. I have been using Abu 5000 with 6lb flouro line. I was wondering what do most of you jig fishermen use for a reel, baitcast, spincast,or a spinning reel. Also any line advise would be helpful. Maybe I am using the wrong line. I was thinking of switching to braid with a leader. Does color make much difference in spooking fish?

Spinning reel, ultralight, 4lb flouro... +1 but I use 6lb just in case for the occasional bass
Common Sense has become so rare that it should be considered a super power

I'm not sure how you can cast a crappie jig with a baitcaster. You need a spinning reel for that kind of fishing.

It all depends on what type of fishing.your doing. For casting, a spinning outfit would be your best bet. Vertical jigging people use both spinning and baitcasters.

How have you been rigging your set up for casting from the bank? when I think of someone fishing from the bank a couple of options come to mind;
1. vertical jig presentation with a slip bobber: With this set up you can use either baitcast or spin reel as the weight of the bobber and jig allow for casting assuming youre using a light reel and rod.
2. Curly tail jig or crank bait: With this set up you are limited by the weight of the lure, typically a spin cast would work best but with the right bait cast it is doable.
Note: Abu 5000 is quite heavy for casting such a light weight jig in general. A small spin cast paired with an ultralight rod is your best option
4 or 6lb mono is standard with jigs; this trick here is to experiment with different brands to find one that you like; but ask about line on the forum and your bound to create a ruckus.
Hope this helps. sorry if this seems dumbed-down, just dont know your experience level

Spinning is better for light lures

I have been using a jig alone mostly, cast and retrieve. sometimes a jig and a slip cork. I will try using one of my spincast reels and maybe more vertical jigging. Ihope this brings me more success. I have always used minnows but I like the convenience of the jig. Thanks for the replies

The only time I MIGHT use a baitcaster for crappie fishing is when I am in a boat fishing deep water (over 20 ft) on the bottom and I need to add a bunch of weight to get to the fish with multiple hooks and there is the chance I may hook a large size catfish...otherwise, I leave them in the garage...I take spinning gear...If you have to go buy one, Shimano is the only manufacturer that cuts their own gears (that I know of), they will last for years, and are a good choice in the 1000, 1500 size range...get a spinning rod (they have larger eyes than casting rods do) in the 6.6ft or 7ft length...ugly stick lite is mostly what I use (cause I like the cork handle)...and you can cast a crappie sized bait a good distance from bank. Good luck and good fishing. There are plenty of other crappie guys that can help you on this forum...and there are many more options.

I noticed today Walmart has added a 4 foot section in Cedar Hill with just crappie baits and gear,but it is not stocked yet.They have the pegs and signs and half a dozen items. When they get the section stocked,and it should not be long,I will be raiding it for sure.
