I live in the Dallas area and just bought 16' Bass Tracker. Trying to get some some tips on where to fish (crappie/bass). One of the main reasons is to get my son off of video games. I use to fish with my dad but after I went into the USMC we didn't get to fish as I was deployed. He's gone now and cannot pick his brain. I know that the crappie and white bass don't usually hit until the end of February/March. I've been to Joe Pool x2 and not a bite. Booked a cabin at Whitney in March and hoping to hit some white bass and crappie. I remember fishing at night with crappie lights and using "roadrunners" for whites. Sorry for the sounding dumb, just looking for tips. Semper Fi!

Ray Roberts has some great sand bass and crappie. Kids want to go catching, not fishing until they get hooked on fishing.

Grapevine is good for whites and crappie. Use a slab with a small fly or crappie jig tied on a bout 2 feet above. You could put a heavy road runner on the bottom. I would prefer white. If you got a fish finder on your boat, cruise around looking for bait and fish. or follow the birds. Right now I would look in deeper water near the marinas or the rocky bluffs just northwest of the dam. If you find them lower your rig to them and just hold it steady. be ready for a slight bump and jerk hard. Pretty slow this time of year. Depending on your boys age, he has to catch something and right away to get HIM hooked. Maybe a small pond with bluegill would be better to get him started.

I also recommend a small pond 100%. Less distractions and moving parts to take away from the catching experience. I don't know your son's age but with my sons the first question I asked myself was: "Can they swim well?". Hope this help - stay safe.

Getting off video games and going fishing was the best decision I've ever made! Enjoy that boat and good luck fishing, you sound like your on track!

Looking for a stocked pond and think I may have found one, great suggestion. Hitting Lake Whitney in March during Spring Break ....any suggestions about the lake?

Sorry, I've never been to Whitney. They used to have smallmouths but I guess no more. They do have stripers, check the striper section of the forum and read up.

Sniper the sandbass are biting pretty good right now on Joe Pool. These fish will keep the kids occupied with multiple hook ups. Check my reports in the white/hybrid/striper section. If you need any help send me a pm.

Don't know about Whitney but for a day trip there are some great small lakes up here with no distractions and plenty of fish. PM me and we shall discuss !
