Recently I have been restoring my father's older reels (Penn) and had line on it from the late 1970's or early 80's. It is Garcia Royal Bonyl I believe. I was going to remove it and respool it, so for grins I tied it to a fence post and pulled out about 50 yds and connected it to a scale, I put #50lbs + pressure on it and jerked it hard, it held just fine, no memory and still very limp and soft, pulled about 100 yds off it and it was just the same but went to #75 lbs on the scale, still no problems!

If you decide not to change it a little trick I use is to go slow in the boat and let all the line out of the reel with no lure on it. All the twisting will come out and let you reel it in against pressure of the water.

Personally I would chan it. If you don't fish much go grab a few spools of different size big game and change it.

If you're talking about less than 20-30 bucks, (mono) it would be worth it to change out, you would hate to break of a 10+ for the sake of 30$'s

If you don't wanna mes with trying to stretch it and remove memory, spool about half the line off and topshot it with fresh.

I never get down to only 1/2 spool of line. No need to waste brand new line where it will never come into play.

Very cost effective, especially for flouro.

I would change it out if you plan to fish often. If you are not planning to fish more than once a year, leave it.
