The method the guy uses in the video is putting a lot of sudden shock on the line which, with the right circumstances, not only can snap the line but will also transfer that shock down to the hook and cause it to flex which can result in missed opportunities.
Well,uh,did the guy in the video break the fish off? You gotta set the hook,as hard as you can,and reel,as fast as you can. Your equipment must complement your hookset. If you broke off on the hookset, then, you screwed up. That's just the way it T-I-S.

I personally employ a normal hookset or sweep all the time and miss very few fish HOWEVER FZ1 has spoken.....

In the Video you can see a lot of slack in the line as he sets the hook. Which can very well pop the line. But a good hard, solid, quick hookset can be done without that much slack. I have an impulse hookset that I don't know how to get away from that can be startling to some. But I try very hard not to let a bunch of slack form before I set the hook.

I watched a guy fishing a small t rig in shallow water lay into a fish that was about 8 inches. The fish flew like a bullet weight right at him, narrowly misses, lands 20 feet the other side of the boat. Fun to watch.

Lol. Here's the FZ1,Yank and Crank, hookset. Pitch the bait, let the bait fall on controlled slack, see the bite, drop your rod tip to get a few inches of slack in the line, then Yank and Crank,as hard as you can.......Works everytime.

Those guys did another video explaining why the guy sets the hook like he does. He explains because of the design of that jighead, that you have to keep some slack in the line so that the hook point can have a direction to go, instead of just pulling away from the fish on a traditional jig and hookset. He compares his method to "cracking a whip".

I may not be smart enough to properly fish jigs. I've always relied on a trimmed weed guard and a really sharp hook.

That's called the DEVO hookset. "You must whip it...Whip it good."

Crack the whip! Just like hitting a golf ball. The faster your club head speed, the farther you'll hit it.

The faster your rod tip speed, the better your hook will penetrate.

at last, someone that understands!! speed imparted to the line equates to more impact on the hook point. you do not drive a nail by pushing on it. setting the hook with a tight line would be the same as driving a nail by pushing on it instead of striking it. i have set the hook like a buggy whip since back in the 60's. i have never had an issue with breaking lines, and i can say from experience that the hook goes through the fish more consistenly than when setting on a tight line.

Ditto on the whip! I always put a little slack before setting the hook.
