There are often a lot of guys asking for tips on jig fishing.Take a look at this Youtube video of a hookset. This is really typical of what will happen to your line and stresses the importance of being in contact with the bait at all times. Notice how the line goes slack and looks like the baits was just falling over a piece of cover or down a small ledge. POW!!! Hookset on a jig

Yeah, yank on the slack like that real hard! That's a good way to snap your line.

If the line breaks on the hook set then you need better line!!! You boys must be new at this!!!!
I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

Id like to see that hook set on a real fish..... Lol I dont have an issue with the ratio of hook ups to bites or lost fish on jigs. Just use the right tackle and find out the proper color and they will eat it. The trokar hooks are a beast on the TW jigs and will get the job done on the real pigs

I paid my money and I'm gonna Yank and Crank as hard as I can! On a great day they fly over the deck,on the hookset...On a good day they fly into the boat,on the hookset... On an average day,I have to play 'em and lip 'em.

A good hook, good line and a healthy hookset do the trick. On a jig I tend to really bury the hook and, because I am in cover much of the time, I really try and crank them out.

It depends on the hook, your rod, and your line. If you are using mono and a heavy hook, you have to set it pretty hard. No stretch line and a light or really sharp hook, then go with a firm sweep. Think about your rod as well, and adjust your hookset based on it's action. When I'm fishing a swim jig with a light hook, my hookset is like a firm crankbait set.

What is wrong with having a high speed reel that takes up the slack where you can provide a "normal" hook set? In my experience when using jigs, the fish aren't swatting or trying to move the bait, they are trying to inhale it. The method the guy uses in the video is putting a lot of sudden shock on the line which, with the right circumstances, not only can snap the line but will also transfer that shock down to the hook and cause it to flex which can result in missed opportunities.
