Guys-
As a still somewhat "green" bay fisherman I have a few questions about fishing in the winter vs the summer, and would appreciate any tips offered.
We fish Port Aransas area and have had success this past summer fishing the East Flats to east of Shamrock Cove on live bait.
We are headed out this weekend, but I have never gone out in the winter. I have heard many say "jetties for big trout" or "fish deeper water", etc etc.. but have never gotten any details. Will we be ok just sticking to our summer strategy of casting live bait into pot holes in that area? Or are some changes recommended? We typically used piggy perch, are those in season?
As always, thanks for any help offered.

Water temp.'s will have to do more with fishing than anything else.
If there's bait working there - it might be worth a try.

This time of year I fish the Fina docks in deeper water for reds and next to the docks for sheephead, the gas wells in the bay hold alot of sheephead also. my favorite spot is the wreck in front of the lighthouse you never know what you will hook up with there..My buddy was fishing the fina docks last weekend and caught limits of reds

I know its a little late, but there are fish stacked along the edges of the flats. All you have to do is pick a flat and fish the deeper potholes along the flat. Or the drains from the back of east flats or flattos or any of the flat drains in shamrock. The fish don't disappear and the fishing is usually better this time of year since there is less pressure and lower water temps.

Which docks are you refering to as "fina docks"? When you come out of the Port A harbor they are strait across the channel to the right of the ferry landing.

It can be challenging but a lot of fun sight casting for reds on sunny winter days. They'll get into the flats and it's normally best in the middle of the day.
Fishing channels at night is another good option for any type of drum when it's cold. I haven't had much luck for winter trout but I don't try that much.

Fish the surf around Mustang Island. I've been doing well lately. Spoons and bucktail jigs for redfish, cut bait for black drum and FishBites for whiting and pompano.
Although I like to move so I usually throw a sling over my shoulder and throw jigs and plugs in the surf. Read the surf and I've been doing well all winter.
