After fishing the creek all day Saturday we had about two dozen fish to clean and instead of bringing them home I filleted them at the state park's facilities near the boat ramp.

Nails Creek park had many visitors for the MLK holiday weekend and lots of fishermen up in the creek searching for whitebass, crappie and catfish. Two or three of the john boats up in the Yegua were all of the same family with Dad, uncle, grandpa and five kids setting up camp on the creek bank and fishing all day. That is good clean fun and creates the kind of memories that last a lifetime. I really enjoy seeing folks bring their kids out to enjoy the great outdoors.

Back at the boat ramp the boys and I set about the task of cleaning the fish when seven-year-old Kathryn from Pflugerville crawled up on the cleaning table to get a better view of what we were about to do.

Running around barefoot and "cute as the dickens" in her light blue fishing shirt all muddied up from playing in the water, it was clear from the start this little girl wasn't the least bit shy.

As she sized up my two tall boys and I, her Ol' Sarge "Grandpa" came over to check on Kathryn and make sure she wasn't bothering us. I could tell by his tone that Kathryn was a handful. I assured grandpa that it was no problem having the little girl "Help" us clean fish and he went back to preparing dinner at the camp up the hill.

Full of questions and wanting to help, she got in real close sitting on top of the table, poking the fish and "helping" us with the water hose. We bled-out the fish first by cutting the gills and a red stream began to flow but that didn't bother Kathryn as it might have. A long series of questions ensued that I would have expected from someone much older. We answered each and every question as best we could and with every answer came another question, this went on for nearly an hour.

Life has a funny way of teaching lessons and I hope Kathryn learned a little about biology and where food comes from and how we get some of that food. I learned that as long as there are little girls like Kathryn this world is going to be OK for another generation or two..
