Anybody notice the TPWD fishing report for Lake Bridgeport? It shows walleye--that's right, walleye--as good on leech-tipped jigs.

Huh? Is that a misprint from the Meredith report, or are there actually 'eyes in Bridgeport? Anyone seen 'em or maybe caught them accidentally on minnows?

And where would we get Yankee bait like leeches here around Cowtown?

Steve Bradbury can tell you where to get all the leeches you need...a bunch of them follow him around on Cedar Creek most days

Yes, they stocked walleye in Bridgeport. If anyone is catching them, they're either keeping it quiet or they're throwing them back thinking they're a cousin to the gar or something. I would suspect that if these walleye are eating shad, they'll have "red meat" in them like the sandies and stripers .

Otherwise, they are succulent morsels to eat. Unless you're a recent transplant Yankee with the knowledge for finding and fishing for walleye, you'd be wasting your time more than likely. However, if you want to take the time to read up on it and ply their typical deep water haunts and eventually pattern them, then you'll have a fishery all to yourself and some mighty, mighty fine eating.

Nightcrawlers and minnows are another great bait to tip a jig or in-line spinner with when fishing these spooky-eyed fish.

Here is the second hand story on walleye
at Bridgeport. I talked with Bruce Hysmith
a couple years back about them. First there
have been a few caught but not a lot. They
were stocked a couple times but I understand
from Bruce that they didn't do well mainly
account the water just doesn't seem to get
cold enough there for them do do their thing
I have never caught one there but have talked to people who claim they have (?)
There is a lake record walleye for Bridgeport however so someone has caught at
least one, but if they are still any in there they are few and far between.

My uncle owns the lake house behind the island at runaway bay next to James Woods old place. He fishes the lake daily and has claimed to catch a few over the years but were talking years here. The biggest one he has caught was about 16 inches on a Rapala swimming minnow.
I would not go there just to try catching Wallys, you might starve to death.

I have fished the lake for ten years. I have seen a few Walleye but they were "accidental" catches. I caught two troliing a Firetiger Thunderstick and one on a Fat A'.

All were caught in deeper water near rocky points.

I saw a stringer of 5 in 96 or so that were caught on minnows near RS island, all were 18 inches or better.

And last but not least, a guy dipping minnows near my neighbors dock in 1999 caught one that had to be 7, this thing was BIG!

Interesting, y'all. Wonder why the TX report would call walleye fishing "good" there? Who do they talk to on Bridgeport?

They probably talk to the walleye fishermen. I know up north that when you start talking about catching walleye, even the die-hard muskie fishermen stop and listen.

Here's a good place to start looking for info to catch these succulent morsels.

I drive all the way to Canton lake Oklahoma
to eat these critters. If I knew they were catchable at bridgeport that is where Id be
every weekend. As far as a red blood line
never heard or seen this. This has to be one of the best eating fish there is. Especially
baking them with a little butter and lemon juice. Canton lake is only 23 ft deep and
most of the lake about 10ft. I dont know
how they survive there I thought they needed deep cold water. The canadian river feeds
this lake. they take eggs out of this lake to
stock others. Id go to merideth lake but
they warn you not to eat more than two a month because all the mercury in the lake,
Some one please let me know if you are
catching walley regular on bridgeport.
this lake is 30 minutes from my house.
