I've caught my fair share of blues and channels, however I've never caught a Flathead. I would love to get this off my bucket list this year. Are they any guides that specialize in this? Any information you can pass along regarding the best way to catch one of these guys would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

When spring gets here use big live gizzrd shad 7+ in, 8-10 in leader or no leader if you're in super heavy cover or strong current. I tend to move toward big live blue gill, drum, buffalo, carp, gar in the summer time. Key is vibration. You want you're bait to be as lively as possible. That's what those flatheads are attracted to. Fish holes, flats adjacent to holes, and heavy cover. Flatheads are an ambush predator. You can catch them on cutbait but i'd stick with blues until about mid-late march then chase you a flathead. We do bowfishing/channel/flathead trips on the Brazos River between PK and Lake Granbury from an airboat and do quiet well in the spring-fall for flatheads. I'll pm u with some info.

Most flat head anglers hit them hard during spring and summer. Live bait is the preferred presentation. Generally flat heads are said to be most active at night. I've caught several nice flat heads during the warmer months on fresh cut Shad fishing for blues. When I target flats I swap over to big live Shad or perch.

We catch big flat heads pretty often on crappie jigs around brush. It amazes me that a big flat head will hit a crappie jig but they do. I used to know a guy that targeted them at Lavon on crank baits. He would use his trolling motor and drag the bait parallel to the dam bouncing them off the rocks. He had good success. Most of the ones we catch are 20-60lbs and caught on jigs and 6lb line. Our biggest this year was 62 lbs, barely missing the record. Point is if you fish around brush or any kind of cover the flatheads are likely to be around. Good luck
