I have been wondering for sometime why there has been no tackle/ sporting goods store in denton or northern denton county. With all the lakes around would there be enough business to support one? When I lived in gainesville you would have to drive to bps, academy, or cabelas all 50 miles away plus or minus a few miles just to get tackle. Just curious to hear opinions. I like looking at tackle before I buy so I still drive 30 miles or so to do so.

I've wondered the same thing for years.
Academy would make a killing.

The market in Denton isn't large enough to support one with the steep competition in the heart of the DFW area (APT, BPS, Academy, Cabelas, etc.) The surrounding areas of Denton won't generate enough traffic and it would be extremely hard to pull guys up that way with so many options to choose from down here.
I think you'd have to see unbelievable deals and/or the only place left in the Metroplex that had stock in certain items for most guys to head up that way. At least for me anyway...

There's probably some truth to Academy being able to support it, because they aren't just a tackle shop.

I'd love to see an Academy in Denton. It would probably cut my TW orders down by 75%. I won't hardly go to BPS anymore. 35 traffic sucks and they never have everything I'm looking for.

Sportsman's Warehouse used to be there, and it failed. Probably a good sign of the market for that type of business. I think a small mom&pop type deal would hit it off big near the shores of Lake Lewisville.

The Internet kills the mom&pop bait shops they can't compete with the prices.and the can't afford to keep enough inventory to compete with bps and academy.

There are a handful of M&P shops in the DFW area that are competing with the internet and big boys pretty well. They may not be getting rich, but they apparently are making enough of a living to stay in business, in a business/market that most of us would love to be in every day... I tip my cap to them all!

I think a small mom&pop type deal would hit it off big near the shores of Lake Lewisville. Sportsman Warehouse use to be in Lewisville across the highway from Vista Ridge Mall. They are based out of Illinois, Iowa, or Indiania and their prices where HIGH. With Academy a few doors down the road in the next shopping center they could not compete. Spoke with the President of SW at ICAST a year before they shut this one down and he was talking about down sizing there stores and my guess the Lewisville store was one that got cut.

I asked Academy for at least 5 years to come to Tyler because they could make a killing...Well, they finally did and they have made a killing...if the parking lot on any given weekend is any indication!...and they did not destroy Gander Mountain either.
Good thing is there is enough business for everyone.

The Internet kills the mom&pop bait shops they can't compete with the prices.and the can't afford to keep enough inventory to compete with bps and academy. The internet only kills the Mom and Pop stores that are complacent and think folks should shop there simply cause they are a Mom and Pop store. Places like APT, Brannan's, Southwest. LFM, Oak Ridge etc all EARN your business and show you they appreciate their customers. That is why those places do well.
