If you are going to try flake food, you will need to crush it into a really fine powder, since they are filter feeders. They may eat it that way, but not likely.

Gizzard shad are not filter feeders. They will eat and thrive on range cubes.
They will also live for several weeks possibly months without feeding.

I have minnows in a tank and I put shad in there often but they die in a day or 2. All you need is some pumps circulating the water on a 100 + gallon tank throw some rocks in there and let it grow algae and you can keep a few shad in there I would say 2 or 3 fish per gallon and have the tank dug into the ground so it dont get too hot. Feed them taste of the wild dog food crushed up they will get big!

Gizzard shad are consider an omnivorous species, but they do filter feed. They use a process called pump filter feeding, where they pump their mouth open and closed to draw zooplankton and phytoplankton in, but will also graze on algae, detritus, and insect larvae. That's just what I've read, and been taught. That being said I've never tried to feed them, so if your set on feeding them flakes I would crush them, and try range cubes like Fish Hauler said, as they break down in water they would become, essentially, detritus. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/gsh/

I tried to keep shad alive in a big ice chest one time and they didn't live as long as it took me to read that one word post ... maybe they were distracted too!
