I think I have read that just throwing GoreTex in the dryer and heating it up "reactivates" it and makes it waterproof again...but maybe that is an old wives' tale.

From the gortex web site. Google is your friend.
WASH Machine-wash warm (104 F/40 C). Powder or liquid detergent. No fabric softener. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
DRY CLEAN If professionallydry-cleaned, request clear distilled solvent rinse and sprayrepellent. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
IRON Steam-iron warm, placing a towel or cloth between the garment and theiron. No need to iron thegarmentuntil it is completelydry.
BLEACH No chlorinebleach. It maydamageyour garment.
DRY Tumble-dry warm. Theheatfrom the dryer will help to reactivate the durablewater repellent (DWR) treatment on your garment's outer fabric.
WATER REPELLENT TREATMENT Gore recommends applying a topical water repellencyrestorative (DWR treatment) for outdoor fabrics, availableat your local outdoor retailer. We do not recommend wash-in treatmentsas theycan affect thegarment's breathability.
STAIN REMOVAL Use a pre-wash treatment such as Shout or Spray 'n Wash, following itsmanufacturer's instructions. Rinse well.
Restoring Water Repellency
Wet out can put a real damper on your day. Thats when liquid saturates your garments outer fabric layer above the GORE-TEX membrane, leaving you feeling damp and clammy - as if your garment were leaking, even when its not.
To prevent wet out,all GORE-TEX shell fabricsare treated with an ultra-thin treatmentcalled DWR, a durablewater repellent polymer thatis applied to the outermost fabriclayer. DWR penetrates thefibers and lowers thesurface tension ofthe fabric, causing water to bead up and roll offthisouter layer offabric, instead ofbeing absorbed. DWR is not permanent, though. Regular wear and tear, plus exposure to dirt, detergents, insect repellent, and other impurities can shorten its lifespan. Thegood news is thatrestoring thewater repellencyof your GORE-TEX shell is extremelyeasy.
How to Restore Water Repellency
GORE-TEX outerwear: Just machine wash it,rinse it,and put it in thedryer, being sure to follow the manufacturersinstructions on the care label inside. The washing removesdirt and other contaminantsand the heatfrom thedryer helps redistributethe DWR treatment on the fabric surface. If water fails to bead up on the surface of your cleaned and tumble-dried garment, its DWR treatment has reached the end of its useful life. But dont worry: You can restore the garments water repellencyby applying a topical water repellencyrestorative (DWR treatment) for outdoor fabrics, availableat your local outdoorretailer. We do not recommend wash-in treatments, as they can hinder your garment's breathability.

This is one of the best. The stuff you can buy at Walmart or Academy is a quick fix. This will last much longer. Actually buy the cleaner to wash them with made for Gore-tex. Get the dirt out.
