Ive played around in the creek the last two years, gaining insight from this thread and getting out there and watching/practicing. My goal this year: 100 sandies, and 2 Hybrids.
Also, I just got a one-man pontoon. Anybody used one on RC? Im thinking of putting in at miller, paddling upstream towards Hell Hole, then floating back down. Im pretty clumsy though, so if you see a big bearded guy drowning beside his orange pontoon, help a brother out.

There are some spots on Rowlett creek that can't be reached by bank fisherman. There is deep hole near the bike park that I know holds fish. The banks are 25 ft above the creek so bank fishing it is not possible. A pontoon will give you access to alot of fish. Last year I caught my first hybrids and I am now hooked. I have some different methods to try this year. See you on the creek.

Once, I put a float boat in and floated up around Firewheel during the run. It was a little crowded and the bank guys were pretty pissed about it. The trip became an interesting lesson in sociology to say the least. Lots of guys mistook my Kenenbec for 'structure".
The funny thing was, good eye contact helped curb the obvious "Oh, did I just cast extremely close to you" routine.
I did get snagged, at twelve ft, by a gal that was cute but aggressive with a spinning rod.
Anyway, I did it once, I wont do that section again. Fair is fair, you cant pass by without spooking the fish.
You can drop in a yak or float or canoe below Firewheel, not easily, which is good to know.
The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

I would not drop a yak or pontoon anywhere near Firewheel do to the amount of people. Instead fish the creek between the Bike park and Miller.

I like to stay away from the crowds. When they're in there thick, you can catch them up and down the creek. Just hate when i gotta pull up a hybrid on the steep bank sometimes.

Anybody think it reasonable to put a tube in anywhere in the creek? they have their uses, but in the middle of the run I think one would find it more trouble than what its worth. For the same price a fella could get waders and do just as much damage to the sandies and hybrids...we were catching limits of hybrids and sandbass in less than an hour and a half last year and alot of the time we weren't in the water....I would say the float tubes would be suited better right now for the crappie in the creek

Reggie All depends on depth and flow. Water is as low as two years ago (4ft). Your going to have trouble with the dam at Castle. Then the white pipe all the way to Firewheel bridge, way too shallow right now. Last year Hubbard was full. Places I normally waded was 6-7 foot deep, so not alot of waders.
