That would of been a lake record!

Only striper are stocked on Canyon Lake.

Well I thought stripers had solid stripes. This one had the top 3 or 4 stripes broken. Guess it was a striper. We don't keep or eat those. Just kept the whites. Are those under the advisory to? I've got a pic, but don't know how to post it

The stripers in Canyon have a few broken lines, and I can't remember the exact details, but I had seen something on a show where they said if the lines are partially broken, the fish was born in the wild, as opposed to being born in a fishery....or was it vice versa? I think no breaks in the lines means that the odds are the striper came from a fishery. I remember it had something to do with the separation.

Well i don't know what it was. The top 3 stripes were broken. If anyone wants a pic, pm me your number and I can text it. I'd just never seen a striper with all these broken stripes.

I have caught several "natural" hybrids @ Canyon and have talked with a guide up in Lake Buchanan that claims the same thing. Apparently this is caused by a natural crossing of the female striper and male white. The few I have caught resemble a small skinny striper, but with the broken stripes and two "tooth" patches. I've caught maybe 4 or 5 of these but always threw them back because they were so skinny, plus I didn't want any business with the game warden. These fish do not have even a hint of the blue color of the white bass. They look like ghosts just like the big striper.

I have seen some large whites @ canyon (pushing 18"). If that was a true white with a deep body and one tooth patch, that would have been something to see!

"Apparently this is caused by a natural crossing of the female striper and male white."

A hybrid striped bass, also known as a wiper or whiterock bass, is a hybrid between the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and the white bass (M. chrysops). It can be distinguished from the striped bass by broken rather than solid horizontal stripes on the body. Wipers are considered better suited for culture in ponds than either parent species because they are more resilient to extremes of temperature and to low dissolved oxygen.

A few years back, they staged this time of year around around the point at Mystic Shores. A deep turn of the river runs near the point. Lots of junk to hang a spoon on even in the deeper water. Take spares of your favorite lures because you will be donating.

Terrible no inflow to Canyon.

I've caught some in those spots you mentioned several years back and they were thick bodied with the broken lines as in the last example and weighted 4 to 5 pounds. If memory serves me they once stocked hybrids into Canyon along with pure stripers but I can't say for sure, but I'm sure there is a stocking record.
As of recent years I only caught whites and those lightning bolt stripers.

Just one more cast!

I'd like to see a picture of a Canyon Lake "hybrid". I have yet to ever see one.
