I've only tried a tube once. It belonged to my son. Sorry to say It felt like it cut me in half you-know-where. I am going to be doing some long distance travelling this summer. I won't be able to bring my yak or power boat along.

Thinking of a tube or something similar that would pack away well, blow up quickly, and allow me to fish in some lakes in TN and other places. Looking for insight and suggestions for a 250 lb old, slow guy. thanks for any help or LINKS. regards, rich

This would be a good place to start. http://www.outcastboats.com/outcast/ They are great tubes a little pricy, but worth it!

thanks, I've looked at their site. What I really need is someone who is near my size and has a float tube they use themselves. I'm looking for comfort and easy/small packing. I see one guy on here has a fish cat for sale, but I am awaiting info on size/weight etc. Candidly, it looks too big for tucking, folded up, into the back of my van for a month long trip. rich

I'm 225lb old guy and have owned a Super Fat Cat for over 4 years now. The inflatable seat and backrest in this Super Fat Cat is a lot more comfortable than a regular tube seat, if you know what I mean! It will also pack smaller than the next size down tube. Now as far as to the transporting of this tube it is larger than most but it will also carries more weight on the water. A smaller tube to packing purpose will only give a lower weight capacity on the water. I'm not sure as to the size when it is deflated as I keep mine aired all the time. Hope this is of some help to you.

Yes, it is. That is one of the tubes I have looked up. The Cumberland from Classic Acessories also gets good ratings. any knowledge abut that one? thanks R

I've not seen a Cumberland Backpackable Float Tube. But looking at it online it does look like it could be a good fit in your case.

The Cumberland has two foam blocks that are used for the seat, so it will not pack down small and will be less comfortable/less adjustable/less floatation compared to an inflatable seat. The bladders appear to be held in place with velcro which is not as good as zippers. The cross bar means you will have to step over instead of slide in. Best if you can get at least 420 count or heavier nylon fabric construction with reinforced seams, it doesn't appear to have that. But it is the best bang for the buck for a one time travel deal or infrequent use considering weight capacity. A good buy on a used super fat cat with inflatable seat would be an alternative, or maybe just rent a kayak/canoe on location? By the time you consider waders, fins, inflation stuff, etc. this will take a lot of room in your van.
Hope this helps.

Thx for the input. I had no idea about the foam block issues. It may be that I can rent a yak when I get there. Also, I guess I can buy a tube in Knoxville. We are doing some traveling before we get to the TN. Part of the trip. Space will be an issue. Rich

Rich:
Just a heads up about buying a float tube on location. I have done that a few times over the years, and sometimes there have been missing parts, leaks, confusing directions, etc. So day trips to water have been cancelled because of the turn around time in getting things right. Maybe a good idea to let the assembled unit sit overnight completely assembled and under full inflation...

I have used a Caddis for the last 18 years or so, and I am carring 270 Lbs. I have had to replace the tube 1 time, but it has held up well.

Look up Oklahoma Pride on internet, a lady in Yukon, OK makes the best tubes I've used. Will custom make pockets or rod holders or just about anything you want. The "Big John" is the tube I use and its rated up to 300 lbs. Super nice folks.

The Super Fat Cat is the best tube for big fellas. When they are de-flated they will easily pack in the trunk. I use a Fish Cat 4 in southern California and it is about the size of a small suitcase. I have fished many 14 hour days in the tube and it is like sitting in a chaise lounge all day.
