If you stop the boat does it clear up? Could be water turbulence off the boat.

Thanks, Doug, I will check that out next time. I didn't know this was happening until I opened it in HumViewer.

SuperG, your location looks good. From what I have experienced and read about, the left side SI crystal is the one that fails the most. I have a XTM 9 SI 180 T that the left side quit working.
You could have an issue with your display. The best way to find out is test your unit on another SI transducer and connect another SI unit to your transducer.
Additionally your DI can't be working fine if you have SI issues. The DI image is computer generated using the SI crystals. Humminbird SI units/transducers do not have a dedicated DI crystal.
Tested my head unit (987csi) today on my bud's boat (998csi), worked like a champ. My transducer is no good.

anyone know what specifically the problem was? and has anyone downloaded the 6.600 onto thier 898 yet?
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Hello Doug.... I have a bird 998c. Is there anyway to plug in another monitor or laptop to the unit on the water..... Video out???? If so, what cable and type of monitor would you need. I want an larger external screen to look at. I was told they have this setup at bass pro for marketing their demo units hooked up to large screens. Anyone else can please help also. I am curious also who currently does this on the water.

BUT, good luck on finding a monitor that is sunlight readeable and somewhat weatherproof. "Been-there-done-that". What someone may have setup indoors is way different than what will work outdoors. Do a web search for "Highbright weatherproof monitor" I have a small flat panel TV above my desk and have hooked to a DVD recorder and larger flat panel TV's too. This is a auto DVD player monitor. After seeing what a useable monitor costs, just got another SI unit.

That note probably refers to some of the stuff that was screwed up with the 6.570 version. Additionally it is supposed to also make images sharper than with older software versions. I have not verified that on the water yet. Several have stated the 6.600 works fine and some not so much. I have it loaded on one of my units to compare against another one with older software. I hope to do that next week.

Yes, your unit has a Video Out port to connect the display to a monitor. The cable is the VC-1.
How do you convert the VC-1 cord's two video cables, to something that hooks into your laptop?

It isn't hooked to my laptop, just the TV on the wall.
I don't have a video-in laptop connection. Some might have that connection and software. I've seen discussions of military grade laptops being used for a video monitor with Humminbirds. Don't remember what brand or model.
One of my desktops has a video-in though.

this question is for WAYNE I was reading in the humminbird product manual abt how the humminbird 898 gets its information. It states this verbaitem...
Pulse Width Length- The length of time that a sonar sound burst is transmitted into the water. Shorter pulse widths provide better target seperation , but cannot travel to greater depths. Longer pulse widths provide better depth penetration, but result in poorer target seperation . Humminbird varies pulse width based on depth to optimize target seperation and depth performance..
second item.. SIDE IMAGE RANGE controls side beams and down beams reading at the same time.
so if you read the above statements would you come to the conclusion that being humminbird uses the side imaginging beams in the transducers to generate the down image,.. and pulse width (which affects target seperation--translation =image detail..
this would all tell me that the distance you have your SI beams set out should surely affect the down image quality; it would seem that the closer in the si beams are set, the better down image would be obtained.
