I know everyday is a good day for fishing, but what is ideal fishing weather?

I usually go to Surfside jetty. I could catch a lot of fish or nothing at all. I want to know what should I be paying attention before I actually drive an hour to Freeport.

What and when is a good tide for fishing on the jetty? No wind or mild wind from which direction? And what weather should I be looking for during January & February? Is there any other factors?

Thanks for helping a newbie out smile

One could write a book answering those questions. wink

Learn to use the moon phase and tide phase calenders and keep a log.

Moon!

In winter, 3rd day of a warming trend. In summer, right before a storm. In spring, warmer overcast days. In fall, on days when football games are played because you'll have the lake to yourself.

Down here in Surfside, what we call ice cream conditions would be water just above 70 degrees, trout green, very light wind out of the southeast or northwest. Try to be there when the tidal flow is at the max, incoming or outgoing. In the summer, if the water is clean, the fish will bite for about an hour right as the sun comes up. The late evening can be good with an incoming tide to cool down the surf.

I hear in Texas the tides dont matter much, but I've always been accustomed to be in the surf at the three hours prior to high-tide. The highest tides (where the biggest fish can "fit" into the sand will be in the new and full moons. These will be your biggest tides. Be at the beach at an upcoming tide around a new or full moon and I'd bet you cant go wrong with the saltwater predators... Although this is for the surf fishing of the Northeast (striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, weakefish). I have a feeling the predatory fish in the Texas fish are similar - But I'm sure there are as many opinions as there are anglers! (thats why they call us fishermen!! ) laugh

The answer depends on who is going fishing with me. If my mother is going fishing, then low wind, no waves and moderate temps are ideal!

Surf is a lot different than the back waters in my opinion.

I have always found that I can catch something when water is moving, and it is relatively clear.

Then again when the water is a little murky, that is when the big drum come out to play.

We are in a good location fishery wise, we see cooler water fish, and warmer water fish, many other locations North and South of us have much longer times where the fishery is absent of many species. And fishing gets tough.

I have observed over the past 50 years are so that for the Reds, the weather was overcast, slightly on the windy side and the water was pretty rough when we caught the most reds, especially on or around jetties. The moment the weather cleared and the blue sky showed up and the water settled down the bite was over. It happened when I was a little boy and again this past October at the jetties at Port A. We caught (3 of us) 18 bull Reds from 1:00PM to 5:30PM on the surf side of the south jetty at the end anchored about 100 yards off the point. When the weather and water got pretty the catching was over!!!!!

I'm going to find out this weekend - Regardless of the weather I WILL be heading down to Port Aransas to hit the surf...

Will take4 a look at the South Jetty, likely Mustang Island State Park, and I'm curious about the Packery Channel surf also...

Who knows what the wether will be but as of now it looks like I will be right when a front will be blowing in - And the tide will be coming in - Not the most ideal weather - But I really dont care

This time of year. On the bays, day before a cold front and 2-3 days after the front. The surf can be on fire right up next to the shore, if you catch it right. On those cold windy days, I usually have luck if the sun peaks out or the wind dies down, even just for ten minuetes, the fish seem to come to life.

Ideal weather is a nice warm spring day with very little clounds or wind. RIght at dawn the wind starts to barely move and the tide starts to goo out.

Im trying my best to go kayak West Bay this coming Saturday.
I've had to cancel all trips for the past 4 weeks due to high winds.
