Well the family and i are headed to freeport/surfside for spring break! This will be my first time in the salt on my kayak. I am not doing any BTB just going to try and stay in the bays. Any info about this area would be appreciated. I have only fished offshore with jigs and cigar minnows. What should i buy to take with me as far as tackle? I will be using bass equipment and have no salt tackle.

I am also going to bring a couple catfish rods with me to tray a little surf and jettie fishing.

What should i target around that time of year? (mid march)

Thanks guy

That's a pretty good time for fishing the bays around here, but it can get crowded in spots. You can go after specks, reds, black drum, ect.
On the jetty, if the winter was fairly mild, the Spanish mackerel start comming in. That can be real exciting. Sheepshead near the rocks are a good bet too. There will also be specks and reds then too. Right when the beach water temperature starts to get over 70, the fishing turns on.

BTW, your bass and catfish tackle will be fine if you rinse and lube everything after each use.

I would rinse it off as soon as you get done fishing, the sooner the better, i personally wash my stuff in luke warm water as well since warmer water dissolves salt better.

if you have any money for tackle you will be way ahead. for $100 you can buy everything you need to catch fish.

buy a cast net for $30(mono), popping corks, hooks, two packs of jigheads, 4-5 packs of shrimp tails and mullets. do your research on colors and you should be fine.

Sounds like you've researched this pretty good already. If you can't get it done with what you've listed, the fish aren't biting. A lot of the lures you probably already have for bass will work on reds and trout too. Spinnerbaits, stickbaits, rattletraps, ect, all work. Believe it or not, but rubber weedless topwater frogs work great on reds in the shallow flats with a lot of grass.

Thats awsome! I love to fish frogs and have loads of them in just about every color. i plan on taking a little of my fresh water stuff with me as well. mainly the chrome and chrome/blue rattle traps that i have.

Thanks for all the info guys
if anyone would like to join for some fishing around that time you are more than welcome to. i think i will be hitting christmas bay and drum bay as well as a few other spots in that area.
I am even up to driving a tad bit further for better fishing.

Circle hooks. 1 and 1/0 size. I like Mustad demon perfect circle hooks. Don't overlook fishing the bottom with FishBites. Good luck.
