I have been seeing some posts about fishing on Lake McQueeney and the lack of a public ramp, so I thought I would send them a letter.

I am a 55 year old male that loves to fish bodies of water in Texas. I love exploring lakes and rivers here that I have never been to before. Recently, I have been considering making a trip to Lake Dunlap and/or Lake McQueeney. I have been to Lake Gonzales. Unfortunately, it has been brought to my attention that their are no longer any public boat ramps on Lake McQueeney. I also have been told that the last public ramp was sold. Are these true?

If so, something has really gone wrong. I would imagine that public dollars are helping to maintain this lake. The public should have the right to sensibly use Lake McQueeney.

I would love to hear the real story and look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your inquiry. It might be helpful for us to provide some clarification regarding an often mistaken perception about how GBRA operates. GBRA does not levy or collect taxes. Maintenance and operation of the lakes is through revenues from the generation of hydroelectric power. And yes, GBRA does support the uses of the lakes when possible. The last "public" boat ramp was purchased and closed by a developer. GBRA has to work with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and other interests to develop controlled access for McQueeney. At this time, we are not aware of access to the lakes other than private means. While this information does not solve your immediate problem, I hope it helps in your understanding of GBRA's role and how we are trying to assist the public with this issue at McQueeney.

Thanks again,

So, does anyone know of any lake in Texas that doesn't have a public ramp?

The diversion lake below Medina has been the source of lots of law suits on public use. It is on a "navigable waterway" yet there is no public acess.

I fish Mcqueeney a lot only because I know people who have private launches there. The only so called public ramp is owned by the Gas Company and it is in the Logs Wood Subdivision which is down River from the main lake. The ramp is old and you need to be careful while launching. It is still being used a lot. I have heard the HOA on the lake will do everything they can to keep that lake from being used by the general public. splat

I think its time to maybe get a law suit going. And get the local media involved channel 12 was all over the illegal stump removal at Dunlap and the no wake zone.

Someone should launch a houseboat and anchor it out in open water. . .and leave it. Start your own in-lake marina. That'll make the HOA happy.

"At this time, we are not aware of access to the lakes other than private means." That's a joke, right? The "lake(s)" is (are) part of a river.

You could also start a movement to remove the "Lake McQueeney" exit sign on I-35. That would really irk the snobs on Treasure Island.

The way you really could get them going is if you could get private donations to buy land and install a launch and then donate it to the state or county. That would then open it up to the public and really get the snobs mad!
Does the state still do any stocking of the lake? If they do I would suggest that there should be public access to the stocked fish that we all help pay for
