On the higher end, I like shimano stradics a lot (2500-3000 for bass). For my pond hopping adventures, I use an NGage Outfitters rod/reel combo. Its a great combo for the price and is especially good if you don't want to risk getting crud in your higher end reels.

I have a Shimano Stradic 2500 and also a Daiwa Tierra and they are both great. The 2500 size is perfect for 8lb line.

I agree with Okuma for spinning gear, i have the Stinson on my ultralite crappie rig with 4 lb Nanofil and i have the Trio 30s on my bass rig with 10 lb Flourocarbon

Okuma Trio 30S. Best drag made on a spinning reel in that price point IMO. I use a 40 for saltwater too.
