Not really kayak related but... My wife has finally talked me into quiting snuff. Any of you guys ex dippers that could offer any advice? I have tried to quit before but it only lasted about a week before the call of the wintergreen got to loud for me. Any help/support would be much apriciated .

Well I've never dipped but on Thursday I will be smoke free for a year. If I can kick tobacco anyone can. It's tough but you can do it. I remember fishing last year around this time and going through a whole bag of jolly ranchers in a few hours to feed the fixation. Made it through those first 10 days and haven't looked back. Really is a great feeling when you defeat the beast. Don't give up...

tobacco free here for 10 years on April 5, 2013 after 30 years of daily use. Stay the course, you can do it and it is well worth the effort.

I quit chewing 17 years ago, I would crush up certs and put them in my lip for the wintergreen sensation when the cravings got real bad. Cold turkey rather than the patch, gets rid of the physical addiction faster then there is just the mental part.

I use altoids now when I get a bit stressed and it has kept me off the Copenhagen.

Here is the deal... I come from the medical side of things. The best thing that a guy could do is quit, and if he fails quit again, and if he fails quit again and again... You will quit. But smokers and dippers need to quit multiple times sometimes. The more you quit the more likely you will stay quit. Keep going, know what your goal, know you are doing it for more than just you but for your family who wants you around for many years to come. Relapse if fine, understand that your mind is both your worst enemy and your most powerful tool. My favorite cousin is a long haul trucker. He started smoking when he was 13. By the time he was 25 he was smoking 5 packs a day on the truck. He knew quiting would be brutal, but he had a goal. Been tobacco free for 6 years now, and he even plays the bagpipes. He personally used Chantix medication to help in the first few months.
What will help you the most.... write your goal down on paper. Keep a copy of that goal with you at all times. Read that goal out loud to yourself twice per day, and imagine that goal finished.
Hope that helps brother.

I'm snuff free 15 months now. I "quit" multiple times before but finally I decided I didn't want to do it any more, I used wintogreen lifesaver for a while, don't get me wrong there are many times when I still want to dip , Iike golf or fishing but the longer you keep that win streak the more motivated I get not to break it. Good Luck.

Now this is an honest question. I am not trying to be smart or snotty, but why would anyone ever want to chew tobacco? It is expensive. It is bad for your health and may even cause cancer. It can put your job at risk (at least where I work). It is filthy, and most women don't like it. It can't possibly provide any benefit that is worth the cost let alone the risk. So why chew?

Never used snuff but was a 4 pack a day cigarette smoker and chewed cigars, twist, Day's Work or any other tobacco I could find.
Smoke free 53 years cold turkey
Tobacco free since 1984, cold turkey.

I just set my mind and toughed it out.

Only thing I even come close to missing are the cigars.

I'm trying to quit snuff now as we'll. I have dipped Copenhagen for about 12-13 years. I have gone from a can a day to a can every three days. On the 1st I'm going to switch to the pouches since I can't stand them. I'm hoping to be free of it by April when the kiddo is born.

Ack, I been on again off again so many times. I actually will smoke and use snus (never cared for regular dip) at the same time. Right now I quit smoking a couple of weeks ago, and am planning to quit the snus real soon ( new years resolution maybe...) I've gone years without using tobacco but it's easy to get started again.. My main motivation right now is my children. My ex wife died from cancer a few months ago and I can't stand to think they might lose me too. I'm going to kick it to the curb once and for all.

I quit smoking in October. Was the 4th time I've quit. Haven't had a want. Just put them down. No cravings either. Mind was finally made up. Smoked for over 10 years.

I quit dipping when I had a fresh 3-finger dip in my mouth and had a sneezing fit. Wound up swallowing that chew. Blew chunks all over a church's parking lot on Rufe Snow drive in 1996.

I dipped for nearly 20 years, loved dipping, didn't have any disire to quit. One day I asked myself what I was really getting out of this???? NOTHING!!!! I set my can down and quit, COLD turkey. About a year later, at a new years party, a friend tossed my his can, I packed it, opened it up, took a BIG sniff, and tossed it back to him. I know that it will only take one time and I would be hocked again. I still have those moments when a BIG dip sure would taste good, but I know it would only take one to be hocked again. thumb
