Hello everyone, I live in San Antonio and my Girlfriend lives by clear lake. We just got a 14 foot john boat with a 9.9 on the back of it. I was curious if anyone had any places to try and fish that would be calm enough for the small craft. I am not brave enough to take it out on the open lake yet, we had it on clear creek a couple of times and picked up a few trout, just looking for some ideas for other spots to try and fish.

......some nice trout,Reds, and flounder down here on Dickinson Bayou. Well protected and this time of year there isn't much traffic as the wakeboarders and skiers are pretty much off the water. Just south of Clear Lake on Hwy 3.

...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

I fish all over clear lake in a kayak. Im sure your john boat will do just fine. There are protected areas in cannals, as well as mud lake and taylor lake that connect to clear lake.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Thanks for the response guys, I am talking about clear lake in southeast Houston to clarify. H4ardcore I notice that you catch some pretty nice fish off of the lake. we put in off of egret bay the last time we went out and stayed in clear creek it was pretty secure, we only picked up a few small specks nothing to special. I am hoping to get out sometime this week after finals.

From what I have always been told and from the very little amount of time I have fished it, clear creek tends to not produce many fish. I grew up one row of houses away from clear creek, way up stream, past where you can get in a boat up in friendswood. Also was told not to eat fish from that creek. I would recommend, mud lake, taylor lake, or any of the other many canals up towards kemah, as better places to catch fish with plenty of protection. I either put in at the ramp under the 146 bridge, or at the clear lake boat ramp on nasa rd 1. Also have a plethora of other spots I launch my kayak from, but not boat friendly, just road sides with water access mostly.

Here is a map I made up for another discussion, but if you look at the red circle, that is my favorite spot for fishing in bad weather. It is super protected and holds tons of fish all through this canal.

After Ike, I SLAUGHTERED the Trout in Taylor Bayou;I guess all that structure(Parts of peoples homes, Boats, etc.eeks)helped. I've caught some nice ones there in the Winter also. That place on the map circled, can be a great Flounder spot at times. I've caught a bunch around that Pipe.

I have fished off of that dock in front of the shelter,at the old boat ramp off of Nasa once or twice, and haven't caught anything, but man that is a great place to get bait, although I have seen guys with long rods pluck out some fish from time to time.

It is certainly a good place to catch bait. There is a deep hole right under the bridge, goes from surrounding 5ft to 8ft deep and I have heard holds reds as well as blue and channel cats sometimes. It would take a long surf rod to get your bait there from the dock though. I have caught a few specks around the bridge on plastics but not much else. Havnt spent much time there though to be honest.

thanks for the info h4rdcore I will have to put in at the 146 bridge next time and try and fish that area you have circled. We put in off of egret bay and headed out to where the creek comes in the lake. I also heard there are certain places where you cant keep shrimp cought in a cast net is this true?

....you can keep shrimp caught in a cast net for bait everywhere on the coast! Think it's a couple of quarts but as far as I know there isn't anywhere where ya can't.

I may be wrong in my interpretation of TPWD regs, but it appears that Clear Lake would be defined as a nursery area, and no shrimping would be allowed for any use including bait.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/fish/shrimpreg.phtml

Check the regs in the above link and read item 5.

Of course whatever you do is your own business... Just sayin'

Try I-45 and Dickinson Bayou to find it on a map. You can pan the image downstream to get near the bay. There used to be a county park on Dickinson Bayou hear Old Galveston Road. With cold weather specks tend to move upstream into the bayous.

What bait you use depends on what you want to catch. If you are after specks try live shrimp under a cork. Dead shrimp on the bottom will catch everything. FishBites in shrimp flavor, chartreuse or pink color, should work. I dont have much experience with artificials so ask others.

Hi there, new to the forums and fishing since summer. i thought i'd chime in on this thread because I live near the Clear Lake area and have fished some of the area. One of my go to spots for both bass fishing and red/trout/cat fishing has been Nassau Bay Park. I pulled a couple good bass out of the park's lake and a handful of reds and cats from the channel running next to the park. I have also seen trout and black drum being caught by other fisherman. If you look at the Clear Lake Area map above you can spot the park labeled on the bottom left hand side of the map. The bite has been dead lately though with only a few catfish being caught in the last visits there. I hope this mention helps.
