its in my sig. that was the days haul from my last trip that was sadly three years ago. We are heading back down at the end of the month and I wanted to get into some specks, last time the water was way too cold.

Key in on off colored water (mud streaks if possible). Softer bottoms with shell reefs or patches of shell near guts or drop offs. Areas with some kind of bait are always good, even if you only see one Mullet present thats worth checking out an area. Birds are always another good sign of bait presence. Work your baits slow. The cold front today is really going to drop the temps.

Corky Lures are a good cold water bait that can be fished slow.

last time we went we had the worst conditions possible. front just came through with lots of rain(chocolate colored water). water temps in the low 40s too. I found a cut where two small lakes drained together towards the river and did good.

Sort of "off-topic", but I just bought the 3-DVD set of Trout Support.

Since I got a kayak now, I really want to learn more about trout fishing in the winter.

I've done it in Spring, Summer, and Fall (my favorite), but never mid-Winter with cold air and cold water.

I've had success fishing the deep cuts, rivers, channels, etc...with heavier jig heads (1/4oz) with a roach paddle tail. The bite can be very hard to feel, but its there

On the flats, key on bait and a muddy bottom.

When it's sunny and cold, fish the stained/muddy water and mud bottoms. When it's cloudy/raining clear water and shell or grass.

What messes everyone up, when it's sunny, fish get way shallower when the water's clear.

I understand the sunny part with clear water, the water will warm faster. I dont understand the sunny and cold though.

I miss typed it...
Muddy water when the sun is out warms faster, and draws bait to it (mullet) and the big trout will move right in after them.

When it's cloudy, they tend to stay a little deeper where the water is clearer.

And just like any other fishing advice, it's general, not written in stone.

All I could catch going "low and slow" was a lot of grass. The ones that caught some trout yesterday were using pink and green small soft plastics.
