More depth capability and ability to detect smaller objects. Wayne, I know that HB has a higher pixel count than Lowrance and I switched from an HDS 8 to an 1198 this year. BUT, I can take you to an area on Cedar Creek Lake where someone has sunk a large amount of tires to make a crappie structure. On the HDS 8, with lower pixel count, you can see the individual tires to the extend you can almost read the writing on them. My 1198 doesn't come close to giving me the same or better display. I have tried everything I can think of to adjust the display to no avail. I just can not get as clear a pic on the 1198. I'm thinking that even with the higher pixel count, the HB algorythms used are not as good or some other software related issue gives Lowrance a better view than what HB uses. Would you agree or care to comment on this? It really bugs me to have abandonded Lowrance mainly due to support issues and had to sacrifice in performance. if you cant see tires with your 1198, your either legally blind, or need a new unit. Humminbird has alot of detail, you need to spend time with your unit, and unlock its secrets, , , and you would see how great it is. why do u need to read tire lettering anyway? its the fish your looking for isnt it? or do u just want to be a picture fisherman? theyre all blown out firestones.. lol
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

All GPS antennas are "real time". There is a new one available that has a Heading Sensor and is part of the 360 accessory. It is available as a separate purchase also. You need the current update to use it. AS GPS HS Read the last couple of posts on this thread: http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...pic#Post5834418

Thanks Wayne, I may have been misinformed. I thought I heard that a new GPS antenna with a faster or real time refresh rate was going to be available. It seems I cant drive my boat straight to a waypoint. The donut is not a problem for me.

Humminbird Standard receivers refresh 4X a Second already. The new receiver that is coming is one with a Heading Sensor that also has a Compass built in that helps with slow speed navigation.

When in the mapping view, I understand for chart orientation what NORTH UP is, but what is the difference between COURSE UP and HEADS UP?

Just got my 998 hooked up and drove around Lake Arlington. Saw lots of things that look like fish, couldn't prove it by putting any in the boat This pic has 3 hard returns that I thought for sure where fish. Afterwards I was thinking maybe they were catfish and didn't want my bass plastics ? . This next one is obviously a tree. the 2D sonar shows fish arches, I think. not sure if the bright dots on the SI are fish or rocks ? Also not sure what the bright long item on right SI side is? . This 3rd batch .. the 2d sonar made me think I had sand bass on the bottom .. tried a slab and nothing took. I am assuming the big bright xmas tree thing is a xmas tree ? -ltr

I sure most people know this, but I just ran across this post on another board and this graphic that helped me understand where side imaging puts things on the screen. The big revelation for me was to understand that the unit only knows how far the sonar return is from the transducer, not the angle. So you also need to find the shadow your target casts to understand where it is in the water column or on the bottom. Look at items 2 and 3 which return the same distance to the transducer, so they map to the same place on the screen, but not the same place physically in the water. Oh so much to learn .. need to stop reading and go actually fish.

When in the mapping view, I understand for chart orientation what NORTH UP is, but what is the difference between COURSE UP and HEADS UP? North up always has North at the top of the screen. Course up always has the direction you are going at the top. I personally prefer course up. Seems easier to navigate to waypoints.

Bird 798ci si hd Can anybody tell me why occassionally the RIGHT SI image will occassionally just be straight static, like completely washed out? It's not all the time, but enough that I'm missing lots of ground. This is the best example I have on hand, but it's usually much worse...
