I need to get my new boat wet and need to procure a paddle. Are the black ones at Academy that run about $25 worth a darn? I can wait another couple weeks and get in at the $50 range. Thoughts? Opinions?

If it were me I would get it and try it out. I don't know the difference in a good paddle

I think any paddle will work. Those aluminum paddles with the black blades worked fine for me. I've paddled all day with one many times. You'll just appreciate anything newer if you get it later.

#1. Where are you? If you are close to another friendly member, perhaps you can borrow his/her paddle to try before you buy.

First paddle I used on yak #1 was borrowed from my son. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the specific brand; size; etc., even though I liked it very much.

I then bought a paddle on my own, after I had returned his. Turned out, it looked similar but wasn't the same paddle. It worked, but...

Then, I borrowed his paddle back when I bought yak #2. Turns out that his paddle worked best on yak #1...but..not on yak #2. (The two yaks have different width; height; and length)

Then...I bought a 230 cm paddle for yak #2...returned it and got a 240 cm paddle which fits that craft better.

As you can see from the morass detailed above... buying a paddle is a whole lot easier if you've tried a few on YOUR yak...and then make your purchase accordingly.

Try it before you buy it, if you can. At least, check to see if you can return it after your trial..if..it is the wrong size; weight; length etc. Leave the labels on for a while.

Rich

p.s. I have a couple of paddles you can try, if you live close.

regards, richg

Check Craigslist too. I see them for sale there often.

I would wait a little longer and get the Carlisle paddle from Academy.

Mortgage your soul and get a Werner carbon paddle like I did...

I have the Magic and the Magic plus, good durable paddles make sure you get the right length for your boat.

If you're near Plano I have an old Carlisle that you can borrow. Just come pick it up, try it out and return it when you're done.

Just make sure you get at least a 230 cm length minimum.

I still have this paddle from when I bought my castaway, maybe 2+ years ago....it works, BUT the higher end LIGHTER paddles are just that LIGHT. REALLY LIGHT. Makes a difference

The best paddle I have ever owned or used was an ONNO. 230 CM and on 23 Ounces.

a heavy, short paddle makes for a long day. carlilse are tough! those $25 black paddles are long & light
for aluminums. they work for me but are just spares for most. i own 2. the salt will eventually caroade
the spring the aluminum paddles. they work fine for
fresh water as long as you break em down & let them drain when your done. carbon paddles 230 + are nice IMO if you
dont mind paying the $. Totally agree that craigslist
CAN be a good place to pick up a used paddle. good luck.
