In the last year the gar have started to take over lake falcon. I have caught them with 5Lb. black bass in there stomach.I did some research its the same problem around the state.Fisherman are starting to complain of catching blackbass with teeth marks in there body. I think its a problem that needs to be addressed in texas before its to late.

I'm not sure how much of a problem it is, but suspect it would be a good thing for the fisherman / bow hunters that like to target them. Regarding the 5 pound bass... I wonder if it was dead or dying before the gar ate it? The experts say they don't target game fish that much. http://www.semissourian.com/blogs/davis/entry/28580/I see tons of long nose gar around here, but alligator gar seem pretty rare in North Texas.

Big alligator gar have become virtually extinct everywhere but texas due to this same attitude. Gator gar eat almost exclusively rough fish, plus whatever is dead or dying on the bottom. The idea that the bass population in Texas is at threat due to gar is laughable.

I'm 100% sure bigger fish eat smaller fish, I'd bet that bass eat other bass too. Perch eat bass eggs. I doubt alligator gar eat a noticeable percentage of bass. I think the biggest threat from gar, and carp, is moving into the spawning areas of bass.

If I was a big alligator gar, I would eat anything I could catch. I don't think it would be a problem to catch a 5 lb. bass or anything else that swims.

If you'll watch them underwater, you'll see that a big alligator gar can't maneuver near as quickly as a 5 lb. bass. They are just too big and too long to stay with the smaller fish when they start darting and dodging. Kinda like a 747 trying to stay on a P-51's tail. They're less of a threat to bass than unethical anglers are.

I talked to commercial garfishermen they also agree to have cleaned gar with bass in them. well i guess i have to arm myself with a camera at the boatramp and wait for the fisherman to come out to gather evidence.I fish the lake at least three times a week and observe whats going on.gar are everywhere.they also overtook the rio grande river.

gar are everywhere.they also overtook the rio grande river. Since they're the native fish in the first place, I would take it as a good sign that they are plentiful. Just because you don't find a particular fish species to be valuable in some way doesn't make it a 'trash' fish. Gar (longnose, spooted AND alligator) are an integral part of our waterways ecosystem. So what if they eat a few bass?

Bass are the most aggressive fish swimming in our lakes and rivers.I heard a biologist once at a seminar say that if a bass grew to 100 lbs humans wouldn't be safe in the water. I will bet bass eat a lot more young gar than gar eat bass.
Retirement best job ever.

No doubt they scavenge a lot of the dead and dying LMB and probably a few healthy ones here and there.

The gar eating a bass is an example of Mother Nature at work. I do not see a problem.
