When I was at the BassCat tournament on Fork I ask the Humminbird rep this same question and he said to use Diet Mountain Dew. Tried it and it worked like a champ. The best thing is I got to drink the rest and still fish.

White vinegar is the only thing I use. Since the white spots are dried calcium deposits from the water (base) the acidity in the white vinegar (acetic acid) is the only thing proven by science to get ride of them safely. Everything else is camouflage that may break down the petrolium bases in the plastic and cause it to crack or become discolored.

Stacey King on an old episode of the Bass Pros suggested this... get a paper towel. Then lay it on the screen and spray distilled white vinegar on the paper towel. Leave it for a minute or so then pull the paper towel off. Use a microfiber cloth and clean off the vinegar. Then if needed use the recommended Windex with Vinegar to put the finishing touches to it. This truly removes the water spots. Good luck and good fishing! That works great too. I have done it.

One thing you have to consider is the anti-glare coating on the sonar screens. Your eyeglasses, computer screen, cell phone, ect does not have that. You should clean your sonar screen with a product that does not destroy that coating.
There are a lot of "snake oils" for cleaning screens, use the right one for marine electronics.
You CAN clean your screen with steel wool, but you wouldn't want to.

With the cleaning issue I am wondering if you can use Rain X on your electronics. I use the stuff on my autos and my shower doors and works great but those are glass and not poloymers.

I actually just bought a large 8oz spray bottle of the Shield brand lens cleaner at the Wal Mart optical kiosk. it was $2.97 and I used it earlier. worked great, streak free and just as good as the $12-15 cleaners I have in much smaller bottles. used it on my sunglasses too. I will be using it from now on. That's not a bad idea Mark. I've been using this. Its only 2.7oz but that will last a long time and comes with the micro fiber towel. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Wave_Away_Sonar__GPS_Screen_Cleaner/descpage-WASSC.html Cant you get free refills too when u buy this at walmart
