I've got the Hummingbird unit but I've seen the lowrance units and I can't seem to get mine as clear as the HDS it seems. Any idea on which one is better and why? I've tried adjusting the sensitivity and things with mine but doesn't seem to clear up and be as precise. I like mine alot though so don't get me wrong about that. Opinions?

FORD CHEVY DODGE All kidding aside, I run the HDS and have friend with HB units. I have come to realize that the "down" scan is better on HDS, and the "side" imaging is better on the Bird. Again, thats just my opinion

I have an 1198 and 898 with lake masters and fished out of a friends boat with 2 HDS, and although I was impressed with their down scan. The side image was the same for my eyes. On this trip I was targeting deep ledges so I would set a way point and then use the map to get on the way point and unfortunately the structure would not be there! Long story short the waypoint/GPS was off by 50 to 75 feet. So this did not work well for me!

I can't speak to Humminbird, because I own Lowrance HDS units (5 and 7, both gen1). I love 'em. The screen quality is great and has allowed me to catch fish when I otherwise couldn't.
With either brand, I think it takes time to really learn the unit and, more importantly, how to read the images you are seeing. This is pretty difficult and takes a lot of time on the water. And I am sure this difficulty is present for both Humminbird and Lowrance units. Just take what you've got and make it work for you. Even if there is a slight difference in screen quality, I doubt it makes a difference in whether or not you will catch fish.

In my last boat I had Humminbirds and my current boat I have Lowrance units (HDS 10 Gen 2, HDS 10 Gen 1 and HDS 5 Gen 1). I will compare the units in the areas that are most important to me, but I would encourage you to compare them based on your most important features:
IMO, the biggest feature difference between the two units is the 2d (traditional) sonar. Lowrance is much better, it's not even close. For me, this is very important as I utilize the split screen 2d and down imaging almost exclusively. LOWRANCE - big advantage
Ease of operation and needed factory settings adjustments. LOWRANCE - slight advantage
Down imaging and side imaging. WASH
Navigation, map card options and update speed of GPS. HUMMINBIRD - medium advantage.
Good luck with your decision, I'm sure you'll be happy with either manufacturer. Although complete networking wouldn't be possible, I'd consider keeping the bird and adding a Lowrance.

I have a hummingbird 798 with down and Si also have a Lowrance 7hd. Both are hooked up. I keep the hummingbird on Si and the Lowrance on sonar. Humminbird is better on Si and Lowrance is better on Sonar. (Had the Humminbird already from my old boat and the Lowrance came with the new boat.)

H,bird seems to be simpler to operate whereas lowrance seems to have better details from what I have seen.

just get one of each and be done with it. Lowrance for down imaging and h-bird for side imaging. Put them side by side up front next to the trolling motor and go fish........
