Hadnt been fishing in 8 months with the birth of our first daughter. Didnt have time to get the boat prepared so decided to give Tex a call. Went out on Hubbard on Sunday morning for a few hours. Brought my father along too. Asked Tex a bunch of questions I was curious about and he was awesome! Learned a bit about targeting shad, areas that hold fish, different rigs and hook sets, as well as the most important thing I was lacking: the art of anchoring!! Previously, I used to drift the lake aimlessly until I got a bite. Never anchored before. Boy did I learn a lot. Stopped at a deep hole and double anchored. Then fished two spots in the flooded timber, the first about 6 feet, and the second about 4 feet. Interesting Stuff!! Caught a few fish in each place we stopped along with constant action in the last area. Probably got 15 fish in not much time at all really. Mostly blues, but some big channels I was not used to catching as well. Ended the trip with a nice 22lb blue to top it off. Big Thanks to Tex! I highly recommend him for either an informative trip or just to catch a butt load of fish. Looking for a bit of assistance on two topics we covered: 1) Portable trees or poor man's power pole. I searched through the threads from back in 2010 and saw some things. I am looking for some long inexpensive material to do this with. Been snooping around on craigslist. The freeboard of my boat is pretty high with flared up sides. I am afraid even a 10ft piece of conduit with a 3 ft extension would not hit the gunwale. Any thoughts on this? 2) Anchors. Never double anchored before. I only have one. Tex was using some nifty fabricated anchors. Anyone have any good places to buy an anchor besides Bass Pro or West Marine? Here's the 22lber. Thanks Tex!! P.S. I need some more 7.5 ft rods!!

Glad you had a great trip, Tex is a good guy,
You might check with Chuck P. about some Box Anchors, he builds them sometimes,
I saw some shallow water poles at West Marine that were fiberglass, but I don't know how long they were, I didn't stop and look at them, I just noticed them, since I started using the box anchors, I hardly ever use my poles any more!
Good Luck to Ya!

I will create a post about box anchors and perhaps about the portable trees as well. My problem is I wouldnt know how to find fiberglass rods long enough or gas pipe.

That Tex is an uncommonly good person. I'm sure he doesn't remember but the day after my boat was delivered. A purchase of a lifetime i might add. I drove up to the ramp and he and some clients of his were just coming in. They had a bunch of fish, no question. I talked to them a bit telling them about my new boat and that this was the maiden voyage. Tex grabbed some of his bait, put in a bag and explained how to cut it, where to go, and showed me his method of rigging. My boat has been slimmy ever since. Thanks Tex.
