I an thinking about getting an 898 for my console and moving my 798 to the front. Does the 898 and 798 use the same transducer?

No, but they can.

The 798 has a standard Compact SI transducer that is tuned for the single 455 kHz Side Imaging freqency that the unit has for Imaging.

The 898 has the standard HDSI transducer which is tuned for the 455 and 800 kHz frequencies that the unit has for Imaging.

You will degrade the performance of the 898 using the Compact SI transducer and you will upgrade the performance of the 798 using the HDSI transducer.

The HDSI transducer is longer, has longer SI crystals, and produces a thinner SI pulse. That produces a sharper image.

Been-there-done-that, I would recommend you put the 898 at the bow since you will be farther away from the display and the larger screen displays stuff larger when using the SI view.
