I have to keep my boat outside in the cold weather. I have a roof over it but no sides. I have the front of my trailer cranked all the way down which enables me to lower my motor all the way down. Is that enough to keep my motor in good shape? I wonder if one could wrap your lower unit in an electric blanket and put the setting on low? Have anyone out there tried that or is this overkill?

overkill, make sure the lower unit has no water in the oil , and it should drain any water left in hub when you lower it down.

I dont think it's an overkill. I would wrap with the electric blanket then put a tarp over that to keep moisture out. Better safe than sorry.

Relieve pressure off of the boat tie down points as well. Let the fiberglass expand contract. Maybe a wise tale though...

start it and let it run for a few seconds without a hose on it, this should blow the rest of the water out

Overkill. Just tilt it down. Make sure no rain gets into your boat with the tongue all the way down. It will fill the boat.

A bit overkill for Texas just lower and let the water drain and you'll be fine.

I used to keep mine outside in the same manner.....
Every winter I wrapped the moter with an old sleeping bag and tied it snug with bungee cords. Then slipped a trash bag over the top to keep s'bag dry.

Guess I qualify for MAJOR Overkill....LOL

Why are you guys wrapping the lower unit on your engine? Do you do the same to your truck?

You should be more concerned about blowing out any excess water out of your live well hoses. Your motor should be fine.

Sounds like I will just lower my engine. I have never had any trouble with livewell hoses. All I have ever done is make sure all the water drained from my livewell. Are you saying you should blow air through your livewell hose from the back of your boat?

not to start anything, but I have covered my boat (in the Texas winter)
and the result was ..moisture was trapped under the cover .
"green stuff" was growing.

I would suggest , if you cover/wrap anything , then uncover/unwrap.. when it is a pretty day ..let it dry out .
then if you must , rewrap it

Not a bad idea. I have had livewell pumps freeze and crack.

Overkill. As long as water is drained out after each use then its fine.
