Pollywogs are hard to beat in the winter.
I have access to a pond full of them and also use litte blue perch we call "slicks" (have no clue what they are ... maybe Green Sunfish)

#1 - Fresh caught shad. #2 - Fresh Cut Carp or Buffalo- I have used buffalo / carp that you can buy in the Asian Grocery stores. #3 - Punch bait - i just do not catch as many big fish with punch bait.
Just my 2 cents worth.

If you are going for numbers, then it would be
#1 - Fresh caught shad #2 - Shrimp #3 - punch bait (well, this should be #1 in a baited hole)

If your only fishing during spawning season then u have missed 3/4 of the great catfishing. Towards the end of deer season my fishing season kicks off in high gear and stays that way till the end of the spawn. Blue cat bite extremely well during the winter months. If I don't catch a limit during this time I have had a unsuccessful day. Course once in a while I'll have a not so great day during winter. I have 3 lakes I expect to.do this good on during this time but if I go to a couple others that are closer I feel like I've done good by getting a dozen good blues. After the spawn I'm spoiled and get frustrated when my catch isn't as good and I get picky and don't go near as much. Normally I just fish for fun and throw most everything back except for the good eating smaller ones

An onion can make people cry but theres never been a vegetable that can make people laugh.
If you get thrown from a horse, you have to get up and get back on, unless you landed on a cactus; then you have to roll around and scream in pain.
Sorry don't get it done dude
It's better to be a has been than a never was
