The pompano are running. Caught these this morning. I could have caught many more but my freezer is full and the Texans are playing.

Nice... off the jetty? Will you share the technique... hooks, sinkers, lines, baits, poppers..? I've been to the surfside jetty many times, but could never catch a pompano:-( Would love to learn how. Thanks

It was at the Surfside jetty, but in December, any jetty or pier along the coast will work. (in the Gulf, not a bay) Go out just past the breakers and fish the surf side of the jetty. They hang out about the third sandbar. I use a double dropper rig with a 1oz weight and small circle hooks, about #6. Bait with little bits of peeled shrimp.(about the size of your thumbnail) or Fishbites. You can combine the baits too. Cast out as far away from the rocks as you can to get away from the little bait robbers and minimize snags. Run two or three rods and they will keep you busy. Secure your rods in a holder or something strong because you might have one bite while your busy with another. You might also have a big redfish or black drum hit, and you don't want to lose your rod.
Good luck!

Yea, you will hang up a few times. You can keep it to a minimum by casting out away from the rocks. When you reel in, keep your rod high and reel in fast, that keeps it out of the rocks. You can use a float if you like but the pompano feed on the bottom.

Do they run at the texas city dike? I don't believe they do. They mainly live in the surf, and you can catch some real big ones near the gas rigs just off the beach. Sure enough, I'll say that and someone will catch a mess of them at the dike.

I'm sorry, but how far out is the third sandbar or just past the breakers? Would that be right at the end of the wooden rails?

Pompano have been running in the Galveston surf for several weeks. I caught a nice batch of them 12/12/12 at 91st pier. They are fun to catch. They come in herky jerky then make a run along the pier before you can get them up.
I used shrimp flavored Fish Bites in chartreuse and pink.
