I understand how to make the wraps for holding the material but how do you prep the hackle for the tail. A quick video would be great if someone could point me to it.

I don't have a specific link to video, but you can YouTube 'tying crappie jig' or something similar and there should be a few. Usually you just cut the tip off the hackle the length you want, or you can cut a V out of the end of the hackle, or tie in strands of the wider part of the feather, depends on look you want. I'll let some of the veterans explain it better, but there's not alot of prep involved with a hackle, unless I am misunderstanding your question.

I measure from the tip of the hackle against my first knuckle for the most part, then stroke the fibers toward the tip, and cut

What kind of feathers do you use? Where do you get them? I have also got the tying down but I can't find any feathers like what I have seen on the pro tyer's jigs.

Strung neck hackle is what we use. Buy it at grandpabobscustomjigs

Heath showed how I do mine too...Have tried the v cut ,but two tip's stacked works better for me.
