You are posting in the wrong forum post this inthe general equipment section. Doug Vandenberg will answer your question their.
The other place I would look is the Bass Boat Central forums humming bird section.
One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!

You need a Lake Master Chip to use that feature.

Water level offset is to adjust for your transducer depth below the surface, not your depth on map. If your trolling motor is 2 feet below surface, then you can adjust for it. Same with the map, if your marked points are different than the map feature, you can compensate for it. Personally, I wouldnt touch either.

It is for off setting the fluctuation in water level--example: lake being 10 feet low. And yes, you need Lakemaster to do this. I have it and it's a great feature!

You are talking about two different settings. One does what I said above and the other is within the map program that allows you to change the depth according to lake level.

These are two different features. The one on the unit itself is what Tracker Tim said. I use it to get a more accurate reading of the depth. I set my back unit to offset 1 foot because that is about how deep the transducer is under the water. I think what you want to do can only be done with the Lakemaster card.

Get the newest version, not sure they sell the old ones anymore. Any questions contact Doug Vahrenberg on here. He knows everything about bird and lakemaster.

Not 100% sure, but pretty sure the 997 can do that 'with' the Lakemaster chip. The 997 has had several software updates from Humminbird over the years and I don't see anything technical that would keep them from adding that feature to that older unit. It is software and has nothing to do with hardware so it should work fine.
If you post this in the Equipment section under Humminbird, there are several reps there that can answer that for you. Doug Vahrenberg (sp?) frequents that area and he's the most knowledgeable I've seen on the Humminbird products.

Juan, one comment on the Lakemaster and the 997, I bought a Lakemaster for my 997. Due to the 997 having a single processor it lags a bit when displaying the map, lots of data on the chip. But still a great map chip.

Yep, Water Level Offset is an Exclusive Feature of LakeMaster so you will need a LakeMaster Card and then you can get alot of customization features for your mapping. Here is a video I did on the LakeMaster Exclusive Features: http://youtu.be/QaVqoLeJeeMLake Level Offset Feature: http://youtu.be/ahIgXPlKX10
