Took Chad from Corpus on his first crappie fishing trip today. A little "How To Section" and he was ripping lips like a pro on the on the first stop. We fished 17' to 35 FOW on timber or anything laying flat on the bottom. 23' to 28 FOW was the most productive depth. The fish seemed to have vacated the shallower depths that were productive on previous trips. I waisted time fishing spots where I thought they should be! Note to self.... "believe in your electronics dumb dumb". Chad and I ended up catching 35 keepers and actually kept 14 solid fish. Threw back 5 black crappie 12" to 15"s that had fungus all over them. Gross! The rest were 11" and under, mostly dinks. 2 cats, 3 LMB, 1 brim. Not a bad day for a salt water boys, first crappie trip.

That is by far the best pic of a crappie I have seen this year. To bad your head is not in it; that would make a great desktop for you. thumb

When taking a kid fishing, it is a privilege to share in his or her life. Make it the best experience you can by slowing it down and taking the time to teach. The littlest things will stick for life.

Lymphocystis Disease.

One of the fish that Chad caught had 70% coverage on his body. Gross!

From TPWD Web Site:

As winter approaches many anglers turn their attention to crappie fishing. If you fish for long enough, youll encounter this unsightly growth on some of the fish you catch. These pebble or wart-like nodules commonly found on the fins, lymphocystis, are caused by an infection of an iridovirus known as Lymphocystivirus or Lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV). The nodules are greatly enlarged, infected cells known as fibroblasts, which are part of the connective tissues in the fish. They are filled with virus particles and they will eventually burst and release their contents into the water. Lymphocystis is spread by fish-to-fish contact or contact with infected tissues. External trauma from temperature change, spawning, aggression, parasites, or handling can facilitate infection and spread. In addition, crowding, shipping, and other stressors appear to trigger disease outbreaks. The disease progresses slowly and is usually not fatal. Although unsightly in appearance, it poses no danger to human health.
