I was told you can launch but watch for shallow sand bars in the river

That sounds scary. Especially with cold water! I would assume Sand Bass and Crappie might be in there and maybe some Bass? Im just looking for something different. Cleburne state park is dead right now! And Alvarado the ramp is Barely usable at this point. Pat Cleburne i just dont care for all that much. Especially when it's low. You ever do any good Fishing Hamm Creek?

There are some deep holes up river from there at paint rock and bee mountain. Late winter and early spring is when I have had my best days. The crappie and sandbass fishing can be great!

Do you think my 16ft Nitro bass boat could get to Whitney from there right now with the lakes so low? I figure the river has got to be pretty low right now.

Havnt been down there in a few months. No problem launching my boat though! thumb

It was low enough last year that only a few power boats dared to try making it up that far. This summer it was up and lots of skiers up the river.

if it stays warm the sand bass should run early... like in February... do need rain bad.. I haven't been there in a while, but there won't be much of a run without a lot of rain...

Caught my first limit of sandies up there on New Years Eve last year! The river was really low and they got stacked up at Paint Rock.

Anyone know the closest(furthest uplake/river) place to launch to fish up river? As low as the lake is I assume Ham Creek and Kimball Bend are not usable anymore.

I took the big boat out last week and had to go to Steele Creek ramp. You can get a jon boat in at Plowman, Kimball, Nolan or Hamm but I wouldn't risk it with anything bigger $$$. Kayaks are the way to go for that area.

Havnt been down below Whitney in a couple of weeks but the blues and channels had their feed bags on then! Should really be getting good with this cold weather. May try it tomorrow. Shouldnt be any issue launching a bass boat at Hamm Creek right now by the way. Lots of folks launching there on the new ramp.

Buddy of mine had luck catching some nice LMB (4-5#) at Hamm earlier this year in his 18.5' nitro when the water settled after the rains filled up most of the lakes. Of course the water level is a different story now...

So the answer is yes? You can put in a boat at Hamm's Creek. I have been wanting to know this same thing as that is usually where i put my boat in when going up river. However, i wont be going up river any time soon until more rain comes. I will be going down river, lol.

I dont know how low the river is right now but the best i can remember i think it is around 7 ft deep at the ramp at normal water levels but i think it gets more shallow heading out of the cove right before your get to the channel. Seems like there is a sand bar you have to go over right out of the cove the ramp is in. My worry is how shallow that sand bar is.
