I have been reading on some forums how they are catching flounder on gulp shrimp tails. How are they rigging them, what size weight, and how are y'all working the gulp shrimp? Thanks for the help!

Ok. Go to Academy. Purchase Yellow and Pink Gulp curly tails. Purchase 1/8 oz or 1/4 oz, I prefer 8, jig heads. Search the internet on how to set up a Carolina Rig. Which is pretty simple. Take a piece of fishing line about 3ft to 2 1/2 foot, tie a jig on one side, come down a foot, tie a loop or a leader, then the extra 2 ft, tie another jig head. Tie your fishing line to the loop and there you go. Now, I prefer to tie a jig with a pink or yellow curly tail and then on the 2 ft piece, tie a mud minnow. Flounder go after site and smell. You just covered both. Go down to Seawolf Park. Walk down and go out on the left side (on a high tide or incoming tide) and walk to the water, take a left and walk about 70 yrd down. This gets you past the debris in the water. Walk out about 30 yards and work your way down about 50 yards, turn around, walk out about another 10 yards and work your way back, repeat..... When you feel a snug, DO NOT set the hook. Wait, cound to 25, if the flounder starts to run, release the reel and let him have the line. He will stop. He will run again, then time, reel the rod to lock the reel in place. Now work the flounder with your drag set semi loose. YOU WILL CATCH HIM. Good luck!!!!!!!

I like curly tail baits with a little scent added when going for flounder with artificials. The flutter is more productive for me.

Small baits seem to be the trick for me too, 3 inches or less. Flounder find mud minnows as kids find candy, when I mimic their movements that's when I'm most productive.

Don't stop when the tide quits moving, I have caught my biggest Flounder on dead slack tide. But that is the time when your bait has to practically hit them in the head.

I have caught at least one flounder my last 6 trips out. I have not been using gulp just due to a cash crunch at the moment. Been having luck with just about any jig slowly bounced across the bottom on 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig heads. I just use whatever i have been using for looking for trout. Then change the retrieve to a slow bounce. Really anything will work. Also can toss a lightly weighted live bait up current and let it drift along the bottom.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Sorry I have not posted much but haven't been able to get out much lately since I screwed up my lower back. I am going out for my first time tomorrow for flounder down here. I have caught flounder back home and it's a totally different ball game. Back home we also get fluke which are very agressive and will attack just about anything that gets in their path. We actually use kahle hook rigs and use pieces of a rubber worm on the back (about 1/8th long). They grab it and swallow it down once they grab on. Glad I learned how to fish for flounder down here from reading all your posts or I would have been missing fish all day tomorrow (if I get lucky enough to get bites). I bought a bunch of Gulp over the summer for reds and specks and loaded up on grubs, swim baits and jerk baits. I have gulp in 2,3,4 inch in colors, pearl, natural, new penny and glow. Also made up some shrimp bites and hopefully going to net some finger mullet in the morning to live line. Back home we also catch flounder on fly rods. Anybody ever had any luck with a fly rod for them here? Got some nice reds and specks this summer on the fly rod. Might try that tomorrow too. Have some great shrimp patterns with rattle traps built in. Thanks for all the info on fishing for flounder everyone. Fishing down here is awesome! Made some great friends and can fish all year round! Will post some pics if I have any luck tomorrow.

Tight lines,

Ricky V.

Hi Ricky,

Sometime the flounder is picky and you can't catch all the time with the same lure.
Last fall at ROLLOVER PASS i was caching better with GULP MINNOW GRUB 3"pearl and in October this year i was catching better with GULP MINNOW GRUB 2",3" chartreuse.
But yesterday i have no bite with GULP MINNOW GRUB 2",3"chartreuse,pearl, red.
Fishing from 12:30 pm until 5 pm on incoming tide i have just two bite catching 2 keeper flounder, one 17.5 inch ,one 16 inch and the bite was between 4 pm and 5 pm.
I was catching the fish with GULP SHRIMP 3" pearl with chartreuse tail.

At ROLLOVER PASS the outgoing tide is better for catching flounder.

I was catching flounder on fly at ROLLOVER PASS,maybe look strange, but i was fishing with spinning rod and no fly line!!!!

You can see one 24 inch flounder ,5.1 lb.catch by my on clouser minnow chartreuse withe on 16 November 2007.
For medical reason i can wade....

Nice flounder. I have seen people throw flies with water bobbers to get them out with spinning gear. Works really good too. Thanks for the info Jean. I read that outgoing tide was better due to it helps them migrate out to the sea and the finger mullet also run out during outgoing. I was unable to get out this morning but am definitely going tomorrow morning. Hoping there is not a lot of people there tomorrow morning. Are there finger mullet moving through the pass right now? Wouldn't mind casting a net out for some. Thanks again for all the help.

Tight lines,

Ricky V.

If you were to use a mullet, how would you rig it? Through the head with a jig head? Or tail/ back hook it with a small weight?

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Thanks again Jean. I will try to grab some finger mullet there tomorrow. You gonna be there tomorrow morning? Hey h4rdcore, I highly suggest buying a cast net because it will save you from buying bait. I use a clear mono 5' with 1/4" openings and it's great for catching mullet and shrimp. The money you save in a year is well worth the investment. For live lining finger mullet I would hook it either through the top or bottom lip or behind the dorsal fin and use a slip weight system with a swivel and light barrel weight (1/4 oz) so it could run around along the bottom. Some people like to fish them dead behind a jig (through both lips) or in strips behind a jig head or lure too. Also heard of people fishing them under popping corks hooked through the lips for specks. My buddy and I were fishing them dead at crystal beach for bull reds and stringing them up on a 15/0 circle hook. We were stringing 5 finger mullet through the eyes and putting the last one through the head to keep them all on the hook. We use the rigs for shark fishing but the bull reds were in close and they were taking them as soon as they touched the water. Hope this helps you out.

I always castnet any bait I use. I was just wondering on flounder rigging since I usually only catch reds on mullet. I have not been having luck with anything eating my mullet lately so I was trying to change my presentation to target flounder. I catch my specks and most of my flounder on soft plastics, just looking for ideas.

Sounds like a great problem to have. Only catching reds on mullet lol! I have not seen these rigs down here but they might sell them at basspro. We use these rigs for flounder back home and put a little bait on the hook. They are great hanging in current or dragging them along the bottom. The weight drags along and the teaser with the bait rides 3 inches off the bottom. The spinner flash gets their attention and brings them right over. It's a 3-way swivel rig with a clip for the weight that runs along the bottom. They call these flounder rigs back home. Hope this helps you out.
