To date, I have caught almost every type of game fish on fly rod that I have wanted. Only a few have eluded me my entire life. One was a carp.

After chasing carp one entire hot summer day with the best carp fisherman I know (Shannon aka TexasFlyCaster) and still coming out carp-less, I've been obsessing over landing one for months!

Finally, today, I spotted one in some skinny water in a small pond in Frisco. I quickly swapped from a bluegill fly I had been working with my Echo Carbon 5 weight rod, to a carp fly I had tied myself and thrown in my pocket.

It took me quite a few casts to land one near her mouth (new rod that I haven't practiced much with). I kept scaring the carp away. To my surprise however, after being spooked over and over, she would move 20 feet or so and then go tail up again. She was vacuuming the bottom constantly.

Finally, after running around that pond constantly for 20 mins, ripping my jeans on brush, and missing chance after chance... She went tail up next to a pond wall where I could keep my shadow behind me.

After I could see the puffs of silt dust from her sucking the bottom, I began to false cast. I landed an absolutely perfect presentation not 3 inches from her snout. 1 tiny strip... Nothing...

Keep waiting... Don't pull it away from her.... Wwwwwwwwiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzz!!! My reel smoked as she took off, hook firmly set. She was so fat, she didn't even have enough stamina to get into my backing before I had her in.

My first carp on a fly, day after my 30th birthday. Didn't expect my first to be a Koi in the wild, but hey, beggars can't be choosers and I was absolutely stoked!

Pardon the molestache, it's for Movember:

Awesome story and Awesome catch! Congrats on that man. You know that koi is a $1000.00 fish to a collector?

Yeah, my mother-in-law has a huge koi pond in her yard. She was not happy with me for releasing this back where I caught it in the wild. That's how I roll!

Ok this is my next goal! I have a lake near my house (not gonna tell you where my honey hole is) that has at least 8 koi carp that someone obviously released in the pond this summer, I tried for 20 minutes yesterday to get one to eat my wooly bugger! Can someone tell me what type of fly is best for carp? I would be sooooo stoked to hook one for these monsters on my 3 wt TFO!

Tell you what fanatic, if you bring me along sometime, I'll make and bring you some carp flies, teach you what I know and hunt them with you. But you have to promise to release 'em back so you can catch them again :P

$500? $1-thousand? Holyschmoly. I was contacted to empty an entire stock tank of Koi and I couldn't figure out what they were thinking. Now I'm thinking ... electricity!
Great job. If I'm the best you know, and we blanked ... (insert excuse here).

I fish a pond that has enormous grass carp in it. Can they be caught on a fly?
