Mold is everywhere you look. So I would be leary about ripping out anything. Why dont you have your ducts cleaned and move on?

curious if the test will tell if it is the bad mold
the ducts do need to be cleaned, but will still pick up moisture under the slab even clean

Mold Testing is something that varies from company to company and standard to standard. Everyone has a different opinion on what proper testing and how to test it. Generally most duct companies use a fogger machine and chemicals to kill mold but depending on the penetration level sometimes the duct work needs to be replaced. Best bet is to find a company who deals solely in mold testing, and or duct cleaning. Try and research as many of the companies as you can.

I do air quality for a living. A Home Depot mold kit will not serve you any purpose. Humidity levels above 55% generally activates any available mold spores. What I would suggest is find a reputable duct cleaning outfit and have your ducts cleaned professionally then after the cleaning make sure you use at least a Merv 8 to Merv 13 rated filter in your unit and make sure your filter fits snugly in place with no air leaks. And I was suggest you buy a case of the filters and change them monthly spring summer and fall and by-monthly thru the winter.

I have a friend who does mold remediation and water damage restoration. His name is Darrin with Olympic cleaning and Restoration in Grapevine. His number is 817-739-8111. He is a good guy and can answer questions for you. Lowering humidity like Molossusri mentioned will help, low moisture=less chance of active growth. I am not a air quailty expert but know a little from my experience, from reading and classes i have taken.

We are a licensed mold remedation company and do alot of mold jobs. We also own Duzts who does all of our duct cleaning, they are awesome. We sub out our air and asbestos samples to Dtech since it has to be sent off to lab.

My advise would be dont waist your money with any of that. Have a a/c company clean your air handler and coils, most of the time the mold is not in the actual duzts. Good Air test run about 500 my cost but there is no need for that. We are dry and there shouldnt be that much humidity under your home, at least not enough to cause mold under in your ducts. Go under there and look under your subfloor with a good flashlight all over, you can get a feel of the moisture/hunidity level and look for any sighs of mold on any componets. D
Let me know if you want the contact for duczs, Kent will come gice you advise and a free estimate if you would like

I had a claim the other day in Tulsa w/ these. The house flooded. They cleanded them out and these people were picky. No complaints yet.

If you are remodeling and it could be afforded a whole new duct system would be the best way to go.

As others have said there are mold SPORES everywhwere, and some do cause allergies. cleaning for spores is a waste of time and money as they occur naturally and will re-enter your house.

however what you should be worried about are water leaks or excessive moisture. as these conditions propagate the growth of fungus from the various types of mold spores. it takes water and organic cellulose based matter to grow the fungus/mold. the water or excessive moisture (not just humidity) must be present for it to grow. mold will not grow inside an A/C unit, on coils or ductwork unless they are made of paper. if water is constantly in the condensation pan you get algae to form but it not a "toxic" mold.

if you have brownish red, dark green to black stains on your drywall, or smell stale water, you need to look for the water leak, as it is the food source for the mold. eliminate the water(food) and the mold will die. the areas can be them cleaned in appropriate manners.

I blocked off the underground ducts and had the ducts ran thru the attic.
I had to replace the ac units anyway and this added 2K to the job,
I will be closing up the old vents as we work thru the rooms with new flooring
No "brownish red, dark green to black stains on your drywall, or smell stale water"
but i did have a bit of water damage on the big window sill from all the condensation, alot from the duct blowing on it.
not a problem now
