GOVERNOR PAWLENTY'S STATEMENT REGARDING A REQUEST FROM PETA TO DECLARE
WALLEYE OFF-LIMITS TO FISHING -- August 2, 2005
Saint Paul – The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty
regarding a request from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) to declare walleye off limits to fishing in Minnesota:
“PETA continues to display goofy judgment. Fishing is part of our way of
life in Minnesota – moms, dads, kids, and grandparents enjoy beautiful
summer and winter days fishing. We care for and enjoy our natural
resources the right way. The PETA ‘Fish Empathy Project’ is nutty and
misses the mark. Fishing is not, as they claim, the same thing as hooking
a dog through the mouth and dragging them behind your car.
“PETA should stay out of Minnesota’s proud fishing lifestyle. Because of
their letter, I’m going out for a walleye dinner tonight.”
The Govenor was then filmed by local news shows, dining on Walleye and
enjoying every bite. VW

I grew up here and now spend summers in Minnesota and winters on Fork. (I thank God every day)
This story was on all the Twin Cities media. Great publicity for the good Governor. Everybody loved it.
The fishing season opens for each year around mid May. Every year for as long as I can remember, every governor, opens the season at fishing at a Minnesota lake.
Mainly a media event, but a very strong attempt to catch some walleyes by the Guv and his wife is always made. A lot of guides have made their bones on this. Getting skunked is pretty embarassing. This can be tough sometimes because the mid May weather in Minn. can be brutal.
But not fishing the Opener in Minn. would be political suicide.
Got to love Pawlenty.

I would be curious about PETA's response. PETA kinda reminds me of those pesky little piss ants that are everywhere. Not a real threat, just a pain in the arse.
