How do ya'll feel about pulling your boat in OD? I have always been told to never pull anything in OD. A buddy of mine said it wont hurt anything. My boat is a 16' Glastron 1977 model.

Depends on year model and make of vehicle.pre 92
gm vehicles were not very reliable pulling in o/d
because of the fourth clutch pack being weak.GM
Recommends no towing in o/d due to weak cluthes

I work at a chevrolet dealership and only do auto
trans. If you have an external cooler it is normally not a problem. I usually tell people that
if it is shifting back and forth between third and
fourth while pulling it is better to place in manual third. And if it is hot outside your better off in third. The 2-4 band is one of the
weakest parts of gm overdrives. I don't really know while I am saying this since I make a living off burned up trans.

Ok, that is true. And I am sure that I will need some help with something at some point. I will say though that my favorite time of the year is in the hot of summer and I show up to work and have a dozen or so of pickups with burned up transmissions from pulling their boat over the weekend.

Like stated above it just depends on the vehicle/conditions. A few years ago my father burned up a new tahoe because he didnt know no to tow in o/d. but it was in the summer and a good size boat....

If your in doubt have a good trans temp gauge installed and keep and eye on it while pulling. Also synthetic atf will take more heat and abuse before it breaks down.

Run a 96 dodge 380 cu in V8 and pull my boat in
OD all the time, had a 90 model with 318 and did
same thing both worked well but the 360 has more
guts and does not shift down so often. Brother
in law will not pull in overdrive. So I guess it
is what you want to do.

How often do you recommend that you surface your transmission. (Fluid Change/Filter)? Also do you recommend running Lucas in it? I have a couple of buddies that swear by it.

Thanks

AJ

If you pull a boat very often I would recomend a
complte trans flush about every 30,000 miles. Everyone had different opinions on this, but a
service is a lot cheaper than an overhaul. Amsoil
makes a synthetic atf which I have heard great things about. The only draw back is its about five dollars a quart, but it would not have to be
changed as often.

Only if you are in hilly country, do not use overdrive as it will continually shift in and out of overdrive.

I pull my boat in drive only between Terrel and Cedar Creek. I like drive because when you let off the gas it slows down quicker which helps when you're pulling a load in traffic.

It depends a lot on driving habits and how big a
load your pulling and also what transmission you
have. If you have an allison you never have to worry about. Then there is also people who can tear up an anvil with a rubber mallot.
