Yes I have found on smaller reels it saves space.
Fishing is one thing i can't agree on but catching would be more of what i do.

I have used it. I didn't have an issue with it but I have heard it tends to nest really bad if you get some hard pull.

you have to put it on under tension. if i were to use braid like that for backing it would be either powerpro or suffix braid (i like it better). I currently use gel spun and it takes up so little space its not funny

Thanks everyone. I use PP on every conventional rig I own and couldn't see any reason not to use it as backing. True you do have to put it on under tension.

also when you make your connection loop, to put it to your fly line, its so small that you will want to make it about 5 or 6 loops to spread the tension out over.

I use power pro on all my reels, from biggest game to the little guys - as mentioned, it will really grab into itself if you dont put it on under tension and then re-tension it from time to time. Best to use a professional winder if you have access to one. If you already use PP regularly I'm not telling you anything you didn't know. I'm sure sufix braid and windtamer, etc, work similarly.

I like suffix a little bit better, it seems to not want to dig as bad

I use powerpro on my trout and redfish rigs all the way up to 80 and 100# on my shark rigs. Fresh water its 20 pound for bass and 30 to 50 for cats. I have never had a problem with it digging as long as its put on with even pressure. If you put it on soft then forget it. Its basically unusable. Never tried suffix or any other braid. Never really had to. Power pro rocks in my book. I am sure others are good and to each his own on personal preference. I am going to try 30# on my 8wt Sage and see how much I can fit. Don't see any reason not to. Figured if there was a major downfall to using it on a fly reel then some one in this section would have pointed it out by now. Thanks again everyone.

30lb should be near the size of SA gel spun. I have just over 400 yards of 30lb gelspun on my sage 4210...so that should give you an idea to work with...total backing on that reel is 490 and still have room for the line

the other thing to do is put PP on the bottom, and then throw some 25-50 yards of dacron and you won't have a problem with it digging as bad

Have you tried that yourself seaaggie? Great thought for sure.

if you use a bimini twist on all of them you won't have a problem. I have 100 yards of orange dacron on the bottom of my reel then i have 300 of gel spun, then another 75 of orange dacron on top then my line. It works just fine...I hooked into a HUGE jack cravelle about a year ago that pulled almost all the line off the reel. i faught him for almost 40 minutes before he finally broke me off at the leader...I think its strong

Good enough for me.
